How to tile a wall

Kitchen and bathroom wall tiles are a durable, long-lasting, aesthetically appealing option for DIY projects. Once you learn how to tile and get to know some basic tiling tips and tricks, laying tile can be a fun, inexpensive DIY project that enhances your home’s appearance. Once you learn how to tile a bathroom or kitchen, there are many kitchen and bathroom wall tile ideas you can try that improve the feel, function and value of your home. Tiles come in so many styles and colours, meaning your design options are endless.

How long does it take to tile a room?

Several factors determine how long it takes to tile a room. The room size, type and style of tiles used, and the complexity of the design you want to create all play a role in determining how long tiling a room takes. Additionally, whether you have experience tiling or not will affect the time it will take to complete a project. It will take most people a couple of days to complete a tiling job due to the preparation and drying time required.

Materials and tools

There are several tools you will need when retiling a bathroom or kitchen wall, floor or counter. They include:

  • Bucket
  • Sponge
  • Spirit level
  • Tape measure
  • Pencil
  • Tile levelling support
  • Tile cutter – almost every tiling job will require cutting some tiles to size and shape you need.
  • Adhesive mixer
  • Tile nippers – this is a hand tool used to cut off small pieces of tile so they fit in tight spaces.
  • Cross spacers – cross-shaped tile spacers are used to ensure the tiles are placed an equal distance apart. Tile spacers help keep grout line straight and give tile work a professional-looking finish.
  • Notched trowel for wall and floor tiles – this lets you control small amounts and thickness of the adhesive attaching the tile to
  •  the wall or floor will be.
  • Small gauging trowel – Use for mixing small amounts of quick-setting drywall compound or mortar.
  • Grout float – This is used for spreading and pressing grout between the tiles.
  • Angle grinder and a diamond cutting blade – This is used to grind or cut angles into the tile to fit into odd-shaped spaces.
  • Drill and diamond-tipped drill bit
  • Tile wet saw

How many tiles do I need?

To calculate the number of tiles you for the job, measure the length and width of the area you will be tiling. Multiplying those numbers by each other give you the area’s square meterage. Add 15% to cover cuts, waste and broken tiles. Divide the area’s total square metres by the square metres covered by the tiles in a box of the tiles you choose. This will tell you how many tiles you need.

How to tile a wall

  1. Prepare the surface: clean the surface thoroughly. Remove any adhesives or coatings and ensure the wall, floor, or countertop is smooth.
  2. Make measurements and markings: measure the wall to be tiled. Place a tile at the top of the wall and put a mark directly underneath it. Then place another tile below the mark and draw a line on the wall where it ends. Repeat this process until you get to the bottom of the wall. If the space between the last row of tiles and the floor is too small for a full tile, measure the distance. That’s the size to which you will have to cut the last row of tiles.
  3. Prepare the tile glue: whether you are using a pre-mixed paste adhesive or a cement-based tile adhesive, follow the instructions for preparing it outlined on the package. This ensures the tile will remain firmly affixed to the wall.
  4. Lay the first row: thoroughly cover the back of a tile with adhesive and push it into the wall’s top left-hand corner. Make sure it is straight and lines up with the mark and the grid pattern you made on the wall.
  5. Check it is level: using a spirit level is a fast, simple and easy way to ensure each of the tiles you install is straight and level. Simply hold the spirit level up against the bottom of the tile.
  6. Continue laying rows: once you are sure your first row of tiles is straight and level, put in tile spacers and match each new tile to the one above it. The tile spacers will keep an even space between each row of tiles.
  7. Cut and lay the corner tiles: Draw the cut lines on top of the tile and then cut off the excess with the tile cutter. Do a dry fit with the tile. Using a notched trowel, thoroughly butter the tile’s bottom with a thin set of the adhesive and press it into place.

How to grout a tile wall

Put a little water and some grout powder in a clean bucket and mix it until it has toothpaste consistency. Use a grout float to the spread the grout on the tiles in a diagonal motion. Make sure all the joints are filled with grout. When the grout starts to set, use a damp sponge to clean the tiles’ excess grout.

How to tile over electrical outlets

When installing tiles over electrical outlets, turn off the outlet’s power. Outline the electrical outlet’s exact size and shape on the tile with a pencil using a tape measure. Use a clamp to fasten the tile on to a piece of plywood. Using a drill with a diamond-coated bit, drill a hole on each of the 4 corners of the lines drawn on the tile. Using a saw, plunge cut from one hole to the next. Remove the cut section of tile. Use tile nippers to clean off and smoothen all rough areas. Add adhesive to the cut tile, put it in place over the electrical outlet and let it dry.

Can you tile over tile?

You can put new tiles over old ones to save time, money and hassles when retiling. However, don’t do so if the existing tiles are loose, lifting, damaged, or uneven. Even if you have the best tiles for bathroom walls, the new tiles will have all of the same problems. Plus, they may not adhere properly to the old tiles, and the added height can prevent cupboards and doors from opening and closing correctly.

How to hire a tiler

Tiling a wall or an entire room can take some time and requires a lot of attention to ensure it is straight and neat. It might be worth your time to hire a professional tiler to get the job done to make sure the finished product is of high quality.

Licencing and qualifications

When hiring a tiler, make sure to research that they are properly licenced and qualified. It’s also a good idea to ask friends and relatives for some local tilers’ names with whose work they are familiar and impressed.

The best kitchen tile ideas

A kitchen is the centre of a home. It’s where you prepare your family meals and often socialise. Since you spend so much time in the kitchen, it makes sense to decorate it beautifully. One way you can do that is by choosing kitchen tiles that will add a fresh, new look to your kitchen. There is a wide range of kitchen tiles available on the market, which can make choosing tiles feel overwhelming. Here, we’ll help you narrow down your choices, and choose the tiles that will work best in your kitchen.

How to pick the perfect kitchen tiles

What part of your kitchen do you want to tile?

Before you choose your kitchen tiles, you need to consider what area you will be tiling. If you want to install new tiles on your floor, you should choose floor tiles that can stand up to the traffic. They should be non-porous, strong, and scratch and stain resistant. If you intend to tile your kitchen walls or the splash back, choose tiles that are sealed to prevent food and grease stains and that can be cleaned easily.

What tile colours should you choose?

The beauty of designing your own kitchen is that you get to choose the colours you like best. However, you should consider how the colour will affect the overall design of your kitchen. Bright, cheerful colours may look nice in your kitchen, but they generally require more frequent cleaning because stains tend to show on them. The same goes with black and white. If you want to minimise the amount of cleaning you have to do, choose neutral colours that will hide grease, food and other stains. Shades of light brown tend to work well with all kitchen decors and are good at hiding dirt. Another thing to consider withtiles is to avoid trendy colours that will quickly go out of style.

What size tiles work best?

Tiles are available in a wide range of sizes, from large format tiles to small mosaic tiles. Large tiles will make your kitchen look bigger and work particularly well on floors. Small mosaic tiles can be used to create a pattern that adds a visually interesting appeal to your kitchen, and work well on walls, splashbacks and counter-tops. One thing to consider is the smaller the tiles you use, the more grout you will need. If you choose small tiles, use an antibacterial grout to inhibit mould and mildew growth, to minimise how much cleaning you have to do.

Consider your budget

Tiles can get pretty expensive, especially if you start looking at marble and granite tiles. If expensive tiling is over your budget, don’t worry about it. There are plenty of more economical choices available, such as porcelain and travertine tiles. In addition, you can save money by looking for sales and discounts. One way to find large discounts is to buy discontinued tiles; however, make sure you buy enough to finish your project, since you won’t be able to buy more later.

Different types of kitchen tiles

Mosaic glass

Mosaic glass tiles are still popular this year. Glittered mosaics with gold hues and metallic, shiny tiles are selling better than the mosaics with colour. More subtle coloured kitchen tiles are also still hot. Large mosaic glass tiles are selling better and are expected to gain popularity in the coming seasons.

Subway or rectangular tiles

Known as ”subway tiles” in the United States, the big, rectangular shaped tiles are now becoming popular in Australia, and are favoured by city apartment dwellers. They are double in size, but make the kitchen appear larger. Order them in semi-gloss and pastel colours to soften their bold, imposing look. These tiles can be arranged in a ”checkerboard” style with black and white or black and red, to really make a plain wall pop. They are easily cleaned and hold up well against grease and splashes.

Graphic style

The most popular graphic styled kitchen tiles are digital in appearance and feature subtle changes in colours to make them appear less busy and distracting. Use these as splashbacks around countertops and smaller areas to showcase them properly. You can also use them as accents, so that they do not get buried in the background of the kitchen. Graphic style kitchen tiles come in many styles ranging from cartoonish images to animals and can be chosen to fit your kitchen’s existing motif.

Large format floor tiles

Large format floor tiles are the opposite of the smaller mosaic tiles. They look ideal on kitchen walls, especially as splashbacks behind the stove. They’re easy to clean since they don’t have a lot of grout lines in between. These tiles work best in kitchens with large walls, although the tiles can be scaled down for smaller walls.

Printed glass kitchen tiles

New varieties of printed glass kitchen tiles feature raised patterns of leaves with delicate veins running through them. This gives your walls a 3D look and plenty of lustrous colour.

Stained Glass Kitchen Tiles

A trend that seems to be continuing is the use of stained glass tiles to create stunning accents in the kitchen. The rich, jewel-like colours and dramatic effect they create make a drab kitchen come to life. Stained glass kitchen tiles are a colourful way to bring richness and light to dark corners.

Choosing tiles for a splashback

It’s time to pay attention to the splashback tiles in the kitchen – they’re one of the most important areas, design-wise, out there. Getting some stylish splashback tiles can make the difference between having a dull or impressive kitchen. There are four main types of splashback tiles – mosaic, glass, ceramic and porcelain, and natural stone.

Mosaic tiles are usually constructed with attractive, neutral tones to complement modern kitchen styles, although innovative metallic and glass mosaic tiles are also available. Glass tiles are cheaper now than ever before and make for very flexible and versatile additions to the kitchen. Ceramic and porcelain tiles are more expensive, but they can add plenty of flair to the kitchen with their attractive designs. As for natural stone, the current trend is to have it as kitchen wall tiling – giving the entire kitchen an attractive elegance. Try pairing up pale beige stones against darker benchtops and cabinets.

How to paint tiles

Tiles play a pivotal role in defining the aesthetic of a space, but trends change, and sometimes, so should your tiles. If you’re wondering how to paint bathroom tiles or refresh your kitchen, having your tiles painted is an easy, affordable solution instead of a tile replacement. Here are some tips on how to paint tiles, ensuring a smooth DIY experience.

What is tile paint?

Tile paint is a type of paint designed specifically for painting tiled surfaces, including walls and floors. When you use ordinary house paint, it will not stick to the tiles. Even if the paint sticks, it will begin peeling away. Choosing the right type of paint is the first step in this DIY job.

What to know before painting tiles

Before diving into the paint cans, here are three important things you should keep in mind for a flawless tile-painting experience.

  • Choose the right tiles. Not all tiles are created equal, and you need to select the right type for their use and functionality. For instance, it’s ideal to get non-slip tiles for the bathroom. Meanwhile, ceramic or porcelain tiles provide a solid surface for the paint to adhere to.
  • Surface preparation is key. Give your tiles some TLC before diving into painting. Clean and sand the existing tiles to remove the glaze and ensure proper paint adhesion.
  • Select the right paint. Investing in good quality tile primer and paint for tiles from a reputable store is essential for a finish that stands the test of time.

Benefits of painting your tiles

Renew the look

Painting over tiles is an easy way to renew the look of any room. Many people choose trendy colours when they install tiles and later find that the tiles look dated and out of place. Choose from a myriad of colours to give your space a fresh, contemporary feel.

Cheaper than replacing them

Replacing your tiles and hiring a pro to do it costs a lot. You need to pay someone to remove the old tiles and check for water damage, and you also need to pay for new tiles and grout/other materials. Painting tiles is a wallet-friendly alternative to a complete tile replacement. You can also conceal dated or imperfect tiles, turning flaws into features.

Easy DIY

Knowing how to paint tiles can turn a weekend into a home improvement project with minimal time and readily available supplies. Depending on the size of the space, you might need as little free time as a few hours. Most jobs take a weekend or less and require supplies that you can get from any home improvement store.

Create custom and personal designs

Unleash your creativity by crafting personalised designs, making your space uniquely yours. While you can draw inspiration from what other DIY enthusiasts did, you don’t need to rely solely on their ideas. You can combine new colours and come up with your own designs.

What you’ll need

Gather the essential tools and equipment to ensure a seamless and successful project. Having these tools and materials on hand should prepare you well for your tile painting project with confidence.

  • Tile cleaner: To thoroughly clean and prep the tiles before painting.
  • Sandpaper and sanding block: Use fine-grit sandpaper to remove the tile glaze and use the sanding block to smoothen the surface.
  • Masking tape or painter’s tape: Essential for protecting surfaces you don’t want to paint, such as appliances and outlets.
  • Paintbrushes and rollers: A combination of brushes and rollers helps cover different areas efficiently.
  • Paint trays: To hold and distribute the paint while using a roller.
  • Drop cloths or plastic sheets: Protect your flooring and surrounding areas from paint splatter.
  • Paint stirrer: Ensure your paint is thoroughly mixed before application.
  • Tack cloth: Use to wipe away dust and debris after sanding.
  • Tile primer: Choose a high-quality primer for better adhesion.
  • Tile paint: Make sure it’s a durable paint suitable for tiles.
  • Sealer: For added protection, especially in high-traffic areas or if painting floor tiles.

Safety gear:

  • Protective gloves: Shield your hands from chemicals in cleaners and paints.
  • Safety glasses: Keep your eyes protected from dust and debris.
  • Respirator mask: If working in a confined space, ensure proper ventilation and protect yourself from fumes.

A step-by-step guide on painting tiles

Step 1: Repair any damaged tiles

Showing a cracked tile | Source: iStock

Begin the prep work by treating any chips or cracks with TLC to ensure a smooth surface. Caulk can repair any thin cracks or minor chips by applying a small amount while wearing gloves and levelling it with your finger.

For major flaws, use an exterior-grade waterproof spackle. Apply a little amount and wipe away the excess with a putty knife, bringing the filler down to the tile surface.

Step 2: Clean and sand the tiles

Fill a bucket with warm water and TSP cleanser (Trisodium phosphate). Wipe the tile down with gloves to remove dirt. Begin at the top and work your way down, changing the water as needed. Let it dry after rinsing with clean water.

Use sandpaper to scuff up the glazing without sanding down to the tile body while wearing safety gear. To prevent beeswax from embedding, clean the tile with water and dry it with a tack cloth.

Step 3: Protect non-paintable areas

Shield your furniture, appliances and other items from accidental paint splatters by using masking tape and sheet plastic. Protect outlets and appliances to ensure that your paint lands only where it is supposed to.

Step 4: Prime the surface

Grab your tile primer and fill a lined tray with bonding primer. Apply thin applications with a roller, and be careful not to press too firmly. Using a roller ensures that you don’t miss any parts of the tile and that the primer goes on smoothly. The primer can take a few hours or longer to dry or cure.

Step 5: Paint the tiles

Choose high-quality tile paint and apply it evenly with a roller. You can also spray paint your tiles if it’s easier and you have the right equipment on hand.

Avoid overloading your roller or paintbrush to prevent drips. Fill in the gaps and smooth down the edges with a paintbrush.

If you want to create unique patterns, use a cut sponge, prefabricated stencil, or handmade painter’s tape stencil. Before attempting patterns, check the manufacturer’s instructions regarding drying times.

Enhance the overall aesthetic by delicately painting the grout lines. Use a fine brush or a specially designed grout paint to accentuate these details, creating a cohesive and professionally finished appearance.

Step 6: Let the paint dry and cure

It is best to let the tile paint dry completely overnight, although it may only take a few hours. If humidity slows the drying process, operating fans and leaving windows open will draw moisture from the air and help the paint dry faster.

Step 7: Apply a second coat

When buying tile paint, make sure you have enough for multiple coats, as the exact quantity needed depends on the job. Darker tiles generally require more tile paint than lighter ones. Additionally, surfaces with accent tiles, patterns, or unique designs may need extra coverage. Using a primer to conceal old tiles reduces the overall tile paint required. If old tiles are visible through the paint, you may need multiple coats.

Step 8: Apply a sealer

Finally, apply two coats of polyurethane sealer after the paint has fully set. Allow the paint to cure for 24 to 48 hours before applying the sealer to ensure it is no longer tacky to the touch, promoting excellent bonding.

Preserve the beauty of your painted tiles with regular maintenance. Clean them gently with a mild detergent, and avoid abrasive cleaners to extend the life and vibrancy of your newly painted tiles. With proper care, your painted tiles will continue to enhance your space’s aesthetics for years.

Transform your space with fresh coats of paint

Tile painting emerges as a versatile and cost-effective home remodelling option. The possibilities are endless, and knowing how to paint tiles allows you to personalise your surroundings.

If you decide to let a pro handle the job, choose someone with the right qualifications. Painters in Australia need a Certificate III in Painting and Decorating, which goes to those who did apprentice programs and took the right classes.

Hiring a skilled painter can ensure that your house painting endeavour goes off without a hitch. They can assist you in selecting the right kind of paint and colour to complement your style and emphasize your tiles. With a single brush stroke, you may transform, refresh, and customise the style of your kitchen or bathroom!

How to waterproof a bathroom

If you’re undertaking a bathroom renovation, it’s absolutely essential you know how to waterproof a bathroom correctly.  While it isn’t the most glamourous part of building your new bathroom, an incorrectly or inadequately waterproofed bathroom can cause serious damage to the structure of your home and can be extremely costly to fix.

Waterproofing is needed to protect the concrete base of the bathroom from the adverse effects of dampness. The waterproofing layer is a guarantee of the safety of walls, ceiling and floor in case of emergency situations associated with leaks, flooding and pipe breakthroughs.

All bathrooms require waterproofing / Source: Start2Finish Interiors Design Management

Increased humidity, temperature changes, the periodic formation of steam and condensate – all of this has an adverse effect on the finish, the decor of the bathroom, on the floor. Moisture penetrates through the seams under the tile, accumulates under the tile, in places of laying and joints of pipes and communications, creating comfortable conditions for the appearance and reproduction of mould, fungi and harmful bacteria.

While there are parts of a bathroom renovation you can DIY, it is imperative that waterproofing is undertaken by a licensed professional. In short, it is simply too important that waterproofing is done correctly – even a tiny gap may cause serious damage to the internal structures of your home causing heartache and costing money down the track.

In Victoria, the work must be done by a qualified and licensed waterproofing tradesperson who can provide a written guarantee of workmanship and a warranty.

What are Australia’s waterproofing standards

Waterproofing must comply with regulations as set out by the Building Code of Australia and Australian Standards (AS 3740-1994).

To briefly summarise the requirements of the standard are:

Shower floorShower waterproofing is essential and the entire shower floor must be waterproofed
Shower wallsShower walls should be waterproofed up to 1800mm high
Bathroom floorIf the bathroom floor is made of wood or contains wood OR if the bathroom is on the second story or higher, the entire floor must be waterproofed
Bathroom wallsBathroom walls must be waterproofed up to 150mm high
Step downOver the hob or step down onto the bathroom floor should be waterproofed to 100mm high

These are the minimum requirements, however depending on how the bathroom is intended to be used, the areas around the bath, toilet and vanity may also need to be waterproofed.

Tools needed for this job:

  • Cleaning equipment (Dust pan and brush / broom / vacuum cleaner)
  • Safety equipment
  • Caulking gun
  • Paint roller and tray
  • Rubber hammer
  • Silicone gun
  • Masking tape
  • Paint scraper
  • Paint mixer
  • Spirit level
  • Utility knife

Materials

  • Primer
  • Silicone
  • Waterproofing agent
  • Waterproofing membrane

How a bathroom floor is waterproofed

This is a step-by-step guide to how a bathroom is professionally waterproofed, it is written for waterproofing preparation rather than a DIY guide.

Step 1 – Prepare the area

After the old bathroom has been removed, the area must be completely clean and free of dust and other particles before waterproofing can start.  The area is cleaned using a broom and a dustpan and dried in all wet areas.

Both the walls and the floors should be perfectly smooth. If the floor is uneven, you can use a levelling compound to smooth it.

Tip! To obtain perfectly smooth vertical surfaces, the walls treated with waterproofing can be sheathed with moisture-resistant gypsum plasterboard.

Step 2 – Apply the primer

Using a paint roller and roller tray, the primer is applied starting from the back corner of the bathroom.  The primer is applied to 150mm up the bathroom walls and the entire bathroom floor is covered.  Primer is allowed to dry.

Step 3 – Fill the cracks with silicone

Using the silicone gun, the silicone is applied to the gaps between the wall and floor and any other gaps or cracks.  Silicone is allowed to dry over 24 hours.

Step 4 – Apply masking tape

Masking tape is used to mark the level to which the waterproofing agent must be applied according to the Australian Standards.

Source: Esteem Building & Renovations

Step 5 – Apply waterproofing agent

The waterproofing agent is painted on to the height of the masking tape starting from the back corner. The waterproofing product must be applied with a trowel in 1mm thickness.

The seal obtained by a coating reliably prevents the ingress of moisture and destruction, while the material cost is much lower than with the use of liquid compounds and plates, and the work can be performed qualitatively with one’s own hands.

Important: The room in which the work goes, you need to constantly ventilate. To avoid poisoning by vapours of the mixture, it is desirable to use a protective mask.

Step 6 – Apply waterproofing membrane

Roll out the membrane and cut to the lengths of the floor.  The membrane is applied, making sure that it covers the cracks and the joints in the floor.  The entire area is covered with membrane and painted over with waterproofing agent to make sure it sticks down.  When the entire area is covered with membrane and waterproofing agent, it is left to dry for 24 hours.

Step 7 – Apply second coat of waterproofing agent

A second coat of waterproofing to the entire area and left to dry for 24 hours.

The area is now waterproofed and ready for your new bathroom to be installed.

How to waterproof timber floors in the bathroom

Waterproofing timber floors in the bathroom is crucial to ensure they remain in good condition. Bathrooms are high-traffic areas, subjected to moisture, and susceptible to wood rot and damage. Waterproofing the timber floor adds an extra layer of protection against water, dampness, and mould that can cause havoc in your bathroom. Here are some benefits of waterproofing timber floors in the bathroom.

Benefits of Waterproofing Timber Floor in the Bathroom:

  1. Increases Durability: A waterproofed timber floor will last longer since it’s made water-resistant and less susceptible to moisture damage and rot. This means you will save money on repairs and replacements over time.
  2. Enhances Safety: Damp, mouldy, and slippery floors pose a considerable risk, especially in a bathroom where water is frequently used. Waterproofing your timber floor reduces the health hazards and potential injuries caused by slipping.
  3. Easy Maintenance: Waterproof treated timber floors are easy to clean, and you do not have to worry about water damage, mould, and mildew buildup. Regular cleaning with a mild detergent is enough to keep the floor clean.
  4. Improves Aesthetics: A waterproofed timber floor adds an extra layer of aesthetic value to your bathroom. You can choose different waterproofing finishes that enhance the look of the timber floor, such as clear finishes that bring out the natural timber allure or a tinted finish that matches the bathroom’s interior colour schemes.

Methods of Waterproofing Timber Floor in the Bathroom:

Sealers: Sealers create a barrier over timber that fills gaps and cracks, repels water, and increases the timber’s lifespan. Look for sealers designed explicitly for bathroom floors and ensure it’s compatible with your timber floor type.

  1. Membrane Systems: Membrane systems are more effective in preventing water damage since they cover the whole floor area and provide an unbroken barrier. This layer is then covered with tiles or vinyl flooring, making it a permanent solution.
  2. When considering waterproofing your timber floor in the bathroom, there are various factors to consider, including the type of timber, bathroom’s traffic flow, and the extent of damage. Hire a professional for expert advice and to ensure that the waterproofing process is done correctly.

In conclusion, waterproofing your timber floor in the bathroom is a smart investment. It will keep your bathroom floor looking great and prevent water damage to the subfloor and the expansion of mould and mildew. As with any home project, seek advice if in doubt, and always ensure safety measures are put in place.

DIY vs Contractors

We strongly recommend that a qualified and licensed professional is hired to do the work.  Even if in certain areas the laws allow you to do it yourself, the consequences of incorrect waterproofing can be very expensive, and not worth the risk.

Waterproofing when done correctly will penetrate beneath the surface and actually treat the masonry.  This precaution will save you much heartache should there ever be a burst pipe, flooding or any other event that could cause water damage to your home, investing in an expert to waterproof your bathroom is a must.

A professional waterproofer will guarantee the work for up to 15 years, often much longer than that, and the job when done professionally can last 25 years or more.  Make sure you ask to see their license and insurance associated with the work before you sign them up for the job.

How to clean grout

If you have tiled walls or floors, you will have grout lines across the surface. Grout keeps tiles in place and fills in the gap between every individual piece. Grouting is made from a porous material; so dirt, mould and stains can sink into the lines. These stains make your floor or wall look dirty even after you clean the surfaces well. Tiles are baked and have a glass-like surface that’s easier to clean, so people don’t spend much time trying to clean them.

Grout requires special attention to appear clean, and ordinary floor cleaners just won’t work. You need to put in some time and effort if you want your grouting to appear clean and unstained. Thankfully, the process isn’t that complicated, and you can use homemade natural materials available in your home to clean grout. Grout cleaning is one of the most overlooked services when it comes to house cleaning.

A before and after shot of a tiled bathroom / Source: Dolphin Blue Mackay

What kind of materials do you need to grout clean?

  1. Gloves
  2. A bucket of water
  3. Baking soda
  4. Vinegar
  5. Scrubbing brush (or another grout cleaning tool, like a toothbrush)
  6. A floor-cleaning mop
  7. Tile cleaning agent

You can also use bleach or hydrogen peroxide along with baking soda if you want stronger cleaning solutions. You will require protective glasses and a breathing mask if you intend to work with these materials, as they can cause trouble with breathing and the fumes can smart your eyes.

The baking soda and vinegar method

Grout cleaning is relatively easy if you have the right tools and some time on your hands. You should mop the floor thoroughly before you begin, as that will make it easier to clean the grout. Here’s what you can do:

  1. Mix baking soda and some warm water to form a paste. You can use three parts of baking soda to one part of water to get the right consistency. Ensure you make this solution in small batches if you want to clean larger surface areas. This is because the mixture can lose its potency and effectiveness quickly.
  2. Mix a solution with equal parts of water and vinegar and pour it into a spray bottle. Shake the solution well to ensure ingredients mix properly.
  3. Apply the baking soda mixture to stained grout lines liberally with your finger. Make sure the soda is pressed into the grout lines and not just sitting on top of the surface. It’s a good idea to work in sections instead of trying to cover the entire floor or wall surface at once.
  4. Once the baking soda paste is applied, spray the vinegar solution on the lines. You should see the baking soda immediately start to bubble. This means that the soda is reacting to the dirt and debris present and has started to clean the grout lines. Wait until the solution stops to bubble before you move onto the next step. This shouldn’t take more than a few minutes.
  5. Once the solution stops bubbling, scrub the grout lines with a nylon bristled brush carefully. You can use a toothbrush or any grout-cleaning brushes available in your local hardware store. Don’t apply too much pressure as that will weaken the grout and remove any sealant applied to it.
  6. Once you’ve completed one action, repeat the process on the next section until the entire floor or wall surface is completely clean.
  7. Wipe away the baking soda, water, and vinegar residue with a damp cloth and mop the entire floor once again. Your grouting should be clean and white.
Most bathrooms and laundry’s will have grout that requires regular cleaning / Source: Sam Bathroom Renovations

How to clean grout in the shower with bleach

If your grout lines are deeply stained and require a more thorough cleaning, you should try using oxygenated bleach for the task.  This is the easiest and most effective way to clean grout without scrubbing. Here’s what you need to do:

  1. Combine two tablespoons of oxygenated bleach with two cups of warm water and mix well. Make this solution immediately before you intend to apply it on the ground as bleach won’t be as effective if you store it for too long.
  2. Bleach can leave a white cast on the tiles, so it’s a good idea to test it before you apply it to the entire floor or wall surface. Apply a small amount of it onto a less visible section of the surface to see if it causes any damage to the tiles and grout. If you don’t see a white cast, use the solution on the entire surface.
  3. Cover all the grout liberally with the bleach solution and allow it to sink into the material for a while. You can work in sections, especially if you need to clean a large surface area.
  4. Rub the bleach solution into the grout lines with the help of a toothbrush or a grout cleaning brush. Pay special attention to the corners. You shouldn’t apply too much pressure on the grout lines as that can strip away some of the seal and weaken the grout.
  5. If you still see stains, dip your brush in the bleach solution and scrub the grout lines gently once again. The stronger concentration of bleach will help remove the stubborn stains.
  6. After you’ve cleaned all of the grout, clean the floor thoroughly. You can’t allow the bleach to linger for too long as it will damage the tiles eventually. Wash the floor with clean water to remove all traces of bleach and wipe the surface dry.

How to clean floor tile grout with hydrogen peroxide

  1. Mix one tablespoon of dishwashing soap with ¼ cup of hydrogen peroxide and ¾ cup of baking soda.
  2. Apply this paste directly to the grout lines with the help of an old toothbrush or a nylon bristled brush. Make sure you apply the paste evenly over the grout.
  3. Let the solution sit for around 15 to 20 minutes. You will see the chemical reaction between the hydrogen peroxide and baking soda. It will clean the grout lines and eliminate all stains.
  4. After the solution has had time to complete its work, pour hot water on the floor and wipe it. This will remove all traces of the hydrogen peroxide and baking soda.

How often should you clean grout?

You should clean the grout in the kitchen, bathroom and laundry every day. This doesn’t have to be a thorough clean, but be sure to wipe the grout lines carefully when you wipe down the kitchen surfaces at the end of the day. This ensures that food particles don’t have time to settle into the grouting and stain it. Regular cleaning will also keep problems like mould and bacteria at bay.

You can do a thorough grout cleaning once a month or once every two months. Some people clean grout once or twice a year, which is acceptable if your surfaces are kept clean and the grout is sealed regularly. Always clean the grouting when it appears dirty or seems to have developed mould. If you keep delaying the task, the stains will sink in deeper and you will have to call in professionals to replace and reseal your grouting.

A guide to choosing bathroom tiles

One of the biggest decisions during a bathroom renovation is tile selection. The proper choice of tile will determine your bathroom’s look, the ease of cleaning and maintenance, and your project budget Here are some of the key considerations when choosing the right tile for your bathroom.

Types of bathroom tiles

With proper installation and sealing, any type of tile can be used in your bathroom: marble, granite, slate, sandstone, ceramic, porcelain, glass, metal, and even plastic. Tile varies not only in material, but also in size, colour and texture. The patterns and combinations are limited only by your imagination.

Before you get started, keep in mind that what you choose needs to be maintained properly. For example, if you choose very small tiles, realise that this will create extra grout lines, meaning more cleaning. If you choose whites or other light colours, this will mean more work keeping them clean looking. You may want to consider those tiles that are slip-resistant to help to keep you from slipping on the floor.

Bathroom design & style

The bathroom is a challenging area and any tile that you place in it needs to be able to meet some pretty stringent requirements. The tile has to be water-resistant, durable, as well as easy to clean and maintain. It should also be beautiful. You will find that these tiles can be used not just on the floors but on the walls of your home as well – you may even use border and feature tiles in the space.

What is your goal? Are you going for a traditional or funky retro look or an elegant retreat? The look and atmosphere you want in your bathroom will influence your choice of tile. For example, large glossy ceramic tiles wouldn’t suggest a cosy retreat, nor would mirrored tiles suit a traditional bathroom.

For style needs, though, there is much more available that can enhance the look of your space. You can choose various shapes to use in the space place. You can use a variety of materials, including glass, natural stone, and ceramic. You may want to use large tiles or very small mosaics. The options are endless.

Cleaning & maintenance

Traditional glass, porcelain, and glazed ceramic tile are uniquely suited for bathrooms because they are non-porous and resist moisture and mould. Clean often with a household cleaner suitable for tile, and your bathroom will look wonderful for many years.

Not all tile was originally designed for bathroom use. However, with proper regular sealing, any tile can be used in your bathroom. Use a cleaner that is compatible with the sealant. Non-traditional tile requires extra maintenance. If you are set on using exotic tile, consider it for a guest bathroom that will not see the traffic of the main family bathroom. Less use means less maintenance.

Renovation budget

The driving force behind most renovations is budget. Tile ranges from inexpensive simple ceramic tiles to very expensive exotic stone tiles. Take careful measurements of your space, and determine how many tiles you need. Then, figure in an allowance for grout, adhesive, tools, and breakage. If your dream tile is out of your budget, you can wait for a sale, or look for an odd lot or discontinued line. Another option is to use a more common tile for most of the space and trim it out in the fancy tile. Again, your imagination and budget are your only limits.

What’s right for your space?

When choosing from all of these options, consider the space itself. When you choose larger tiles, you have fewer grout lights to fill in. This helps to make the space look larger. Perhaps your ceilings are very low. If you run the tiling in a vertical strip, perhaps using some feature tiles as well, this gives the appearance of height. It helps to change the perception of the room.

Selecting colours

The next consideration is the colouring. Neutral colours – like white, beige or cream – remain the common winner because it is easy to match with. However, you can use a range of options here depending what you prefer to see in this space. You may want to choose the bold colours found in glass mosaic tiles, placing these on just one wall in the bathroom. It will create a very appealing look. You can use bold colours in random locations throughout the space for a different type of appeal. Here’s some tips when selecting a colour for your tiles:

“Clean” looking colours: that is, those that don’t easily display dirt or other blemishes. Stark whites, blacks, and dark greys tend to show spills and stains, so it’s better to pick more neutral colours where possible to help cut down cleaning time.

Colours that create space: the right colours will help you create the illusion of having more space in a small room. Since the bathroom is generally one of the smallest rooms in the house, this is pretty important. In general, dark colours can close a space in, whilst light colours will create a more spacious feel. If you do want to use dark tiles, consider them as part of a feature or pattern, rather than the base.

Eye-catching colours: Opt for colours that are going to draw the eye to a major feature, like a beautiful freestanding bath, a shower stall, or a lovely mirror. This generally works well when the bathroom is filled with neutral colours, meaning that the coloured tiles being used around the feature are more striking.

Colours that create mood: Colour has an impact on the feel and mood of the bathroom, so consider what atmosphere you’re trying to create. Are you looking for a clean finish, a dramatic bathroom, or a relaxing retreat? Dramatic rooms will do well with bold colours, while classic neutral colours, like greys and whites are great for a clean-cut look. To create a feeling of calm, consider earthy tones, like greens, blues, yellows, and soft purples.

Guide to picking the right bathroom wall tiles

When remodeling your bathroom, you should give a lot of consideration to the type and pattern of wall tiles you want to use. Wall tiles can set the tone for the entire bathroom. Depending on what you choose, your bathroom can look simple, elegant or even fun. Here are some things to consider when picking out wall tiles.

Choose a Tile Material

There are many different wall-tile materials that you can choose from. Learn about the different types so that you can choose the one that fits your bathroom design, budget and lifestyle best.

  • Ceramic tiles are very popular because they are easy to clean, hold up well in high moisture environments and are inexpensive. They are available in hundreds of sizes, colours, and patterns.
  • Porcelain tiles stand up even better in high moisture environments than ceramic wall tiles, and they’re just as easy to keep clean. However, the extra durability comes with a steeper price. They are also available in hundreds of sizes, colours, and patterns.
  • Natural stone tiles are often used in designer bathrooms because they look so beautiful. The downside is that stone is porous and is prone to staining in high moisture environments. However, the application of a clear waterproof sealant can help to protect the stone.
  • Natural clay tiles have the same benefits and drawbacks of natural stone tiles. They look gorgeous but are prone to stains caused by moisture. However, just as with natural stone tiles, a clear waterproof sealant can protect clay tiles from moisture damage.
  • Glass tiles come in a wide variety of colours and designs, making them a great choice for colourful bathroom designs. Glass has a shiny, reflective quality not available in the other tile materials. Glass tiles hold up very well in moist environments and are easy to care for.

Choose a Pattern

You can create a pattern by using either all of the same colour tile or tile in different colours. A design using only one colour and size of tile looks simple and elegant and focuses the attention on the bathroom fixtures. A patterned design using different-coloured or different-sized tiles draws attention to the walls and adds an additional layer of interest to the bathroom.

There are several ways you can create a wall tile design. Here are some ideas that are easy to do by yourself:

  • The easiest way to create a tile wall pattern is to purchase tiles that already have a pattern on them.
  • Plain tiles can be installed in simple pattens such as placing large tiles on one row, small tiles on the next row and repeating the pattern.
  • You can make a checkerboard pattern by alternating tile colours.

There are numerous designs that you can create with wall tiles, such as diamond patterns, but sophisticated designs require careful measurement and quite a bit of tile cutting. If you are not experienced at installing tile, hire a reputable tiler to help you out.

  • When using both paint and tiles on your bathroom walls, use similar colours. You may ask why; it will ease the transition from one location to another. Different colours create hard stops when transitioning from a particular space to another.
  • Put tiles in your bathroom’s ceiling. It is a perfect strategy that will help increase your bathroom’s height.
  • Neutral colours are very popular with most bathrooms, but you get free to use what you prefer. But be careful about how you use your bright, dark, and bold colours. You may need to avoid colours that will dull your bathroom and interfere with its visibility. If you are the colour person, try balancing the neutral and bright colours. Neutral colours are exceptional, and you can get creative when using them in your bathroom. Though one neutral colour is okay, try mixing them.
