How to paint doors

Many homeowners in Australia want to know how to paint doors properly. If you want to paint your old door and give it a long-lasting finish, there are several simple steps you have to take. It takes the right tools and supplies, proper door preparation and good painting techniques to get quality results. Selecting the right type and colour paint also impacts the way doors look after being repainted. The following tips for painting doors or repainting doors can create doors that make a lasting impression on people entering any room or home.

Materials and tools

  • Ladder or stepstool: Use the ladder or stepstool to reach the top hinge holding the door in place.
  • Drill/screwdriver: Use the drill or screwdriver to remove the screws holding the door in place, put lag screws into the top and bottom of the door and remove the hinges, doorknobs and other door hardware.
  • Sawhorse: Lay the door flat with the lag screws on each end on the sawhorse.
  • Tarps or sheets of plastic: Use the tarps or sheets of plastic to cover the floor under the area where you will be cleaning, sanding and painting the door.
  • Grease cutter cleanser and some rags: Apply liquid or spray cleanser to the door to remove oil, grease, dirt and stains using the rags.
  • Sander/sandpaper/chemical stripper: Remove paint buildup on a wooden door with a sharp carbide or stainless steel scraper and smoothen with the sander. Using the best sander for doors is important. On metal doors use sandpaper. Use chemical stripper on doors made of fibreglass to remove flaking paint.
  • Filler: Fill door dents, cracks and holes with spackling compound, two-part filler or epoxy wood filler.
  • Door primer paint: Paint the entire door with door primer paint that’s grey or white primer whether you are painting internal doors or external doors.
  • Paint trays: Pour a little paint at a time into the paint trays.
  • Paint, high-density foam mini rollers and paintbrushes: Using a paintbrush, edge in around panels and windows. Use mini rollers to paint the entire door.
  • Painter’s tape: Cover weather stripping with painter’s tape so the door won’t stick when you re-hang an exterior door.

What type of paint to use on doors

Oil-based paints are ideal to use when painting interior doors. Water-based paints are better for exterior doors and damp areas.

How to prep interior doors for painting

The following are some simple steps for preparing interior doors for painting.

  1. Clear the area and lay down a drop sheet: Remove furnishings from the area where the door will be cleaned and painted and cover it with protective tarps, plastic strips or drop sheets.
  2. Remove door: Take the door off its hinges and remove the doorknobs, handles, locks, kick plates and other hardware.
  3. Wash the door: Apply spray or liquid cleanser to the door and use rags to clean and wash off the door.
  4. Sand the surface: An electric sander or sandpaper can be used to remove loose paint and smoothen out imperfections in the door’s surface.

How to fill cracks before painting

The first step in filling cracks is to clean the wall thoroughly to remove any debris. Then, use a putty knife to apply a filler such as spackle or joint compound over the crack, making sure to press the filler deep into the crack to ensure maximum coverage. Once the filler is dry, use sandpaper to smooth it down to a flat surface, being careful not to sand too much and cause further damage. Finally, wipe the wall with a damp cloth to remove any excess dust before priming and painting. By properly filling cracks, you can achieve a smooth and flawless finish for your next painting project.

Popular filler brands you can consider are Buidler’s Bog, Elmers, and Minwax.

How to paint a door

Here some simple steps and helpful tips for painting doors.

  1. Apply a primer if necessary: When painting bare wood or putting a light colour over a much darker one, you should apply a primer. When using self-priming paint or painting over surfaces painted in a similar colour, primer isn’t required.
  2. Apply an undercoat: When applying an undercoat, use a paintbrush to do the edges of the door. Then use a paint roller for doors in a ‘W’ pattern to cover the door with undercoat evenly.
  3. Paint edges: Use a paintbrush to paint the door’s edges to seal it and keep moisture out. Apply the same number of coats as on the main surface.
  4. Paint the main surface: When painting the door’s main surface, use a paint roller for doors. Apply the paint using a ‘W’ pattern technique for a neater, more even coverage. Painting doors with a roller is the most efficient way to get the job done.
  5. Leave to dry and apply a second coat if necessary: Leave the painted door to dry for a few hours. If you see imperfections or incomplete or uneven coverage, apply another coat of paint.
  6. Reattach door when completely dry: When repainting doors, to prevent them from sticking, let them dry completely before reattaching them. That takes 6 to 24 hours depending on the paint, temperature and moisture in the air.

How to paint door frames

When painting door frames, first put down a plastic drop cloth and use 7.6-10.2 cm painter’s tape to line the wall area around the door frame. Clean the frame with grease-cutting cleanser, sand it lightly, fill in any small chips and gouges using wood putty. When painting door frames, the right door paint is important. Use semi-gloss, latex interior paint or exterior trim paint, if the frame opens outside.

Use angled tip handheld brushes for efficiency, precision and to get into tight spaces. Hold the metal band below the bristles for better control over paint placement. Start painting from the frame’s upper inside corner using long, sweeping strokes. When you get to the interior surface’s bottom, repeat the process on the opposite side. Work your way outside the frame and paint the jambs on both sides. To avoid leaving seams, overlap your strokes. Let it dry for 2-6 hours and apply a second coat.

How to paint a door without removing it

The best way to paint a door without removing it is first to wedge the door and cover the hinges, doorknob and lock with painter’s tape. Clean the door to remove grease, especially near the doorknobs and handles. Use a paintbrush on the top, edge and bottom of the door. Use a foam roller when painting doors with a roller. When you are done painting, carefully remove the painter’s tape.

How to build a pergola

A DIY backyard project can be very satisfying to complete. It takes skills to build a modern pergola, which may be something you feel comfortable doing yourself. With cheap pergola kits available, even a novice builder has the ability to put together the outdoor structure. Keep reading this guide for a range of pergola ideas and how you can DIY one.

What is a pergola?

A pergola is an outdoor structure consisting of beams that support an open or closed roof. It’s open on all sides and can be freestanding, attached to a house, or come with a deck or patio. It offers protection from the sun, enhances the look of a property, and serves as a dedicated space outside for entertaining family and friends. There are many pergola ideas to choose from.

Different pergola styles

There are three main pergola styles to consider. They are freestanding, attached, with a deck or patio. Each has a different look and list of advantages. To better understand what makes each stand apart from another, we’ve listed a few of their key features below. When wanting to learn how to build a pergola, you must be clear on the type of structure you’d prefer to have built.

Freestanding

Freestanding pergola kits are for homeowners that want a pergola separate from their house. Choosing this kit style allows you to place the structure anywhere on your property that you see fit. It’s among the most accessible types of pergolas to build because it doesn’t require additional materials to attach it to another structure. It’s a structure that can be in the garden or another area of the yard where it gets a lot of use.

Attached

A structure of this nature is similar to a freestanding pergola in appearance. It is, however, an extension of the house. It can be entered from indoors and provides a unique experience sitting outdoors. You can paint timber pergola designs to match the exterior of the home and enhance its curb appeal.

With a deck or patio

A pergola built in this style is outstanding in appearance and function. It comes with a deck or patio perfect for grilling, container gardening, and drying off after swimming in the pool. The pergola is a welcome retreat on the hottest days and remains a place to sit around a firepit during the year’s colder evenings.

Tools and materials needed to DIY a pergola

If you’re considering building a pergola, you’re going to need specific tools and materials to be successful. To help you get organised, we’ve created lists for your reference. You’ll want to make sure that you have everything on hand before beginning the project to not experience interruptions along the way.

Tools

Easy pergola builds require some tools. You’re able to find them at your local hardware store if you don’t already have them in your toolbox. A saw and drill are necessary. So are bolts and other fasteners that allow you to join the boards together.

  • Saw
  • Drill
  • Measuring tape
  • Hammar
  • Shovel

Materials

You’re going to need the beams for the posts, sides and roof of the pergola. It is your choice what type of wood you choose. A standard pergola consists of four posts, four header boards, crossing boards, and stringer boards. It is easiest to have these pre-cut to ensure they are the right lengths that match.

You will also require galvanised screws and pre-mixed quick-dry concrete.

How to build a free standing pergola

Building a free standing pergola takes time but is well worth investing time put into the task. It’s a straightforward process consisting of several steps, which are listed here for you to follow. If you’re planning on doing it yourself, you’ll want to be mentally and physically prepared to complete the project. You’ll need to devote time and money to complete the easy DIY pergola.

  1. Clear the designated area: You’ll need to have a level place to build the pergola. It should be free of rocks, tree branches, and organic debris.
  2. Dig post holes: You can rent a post hole digger. It saves you time and energy by making fast work of the job. Ensure the holes are big enough so that the posts will be secure.
  3. Set the posts in place: You’ll need to put the posts in the holes. They form the supporting structure of the pergola. After you have put the poles in place, pour in the pre-mixed quick-dry concrete.
  4. Attach the beams and rafters: The top of your structure will provide you relief from the elements. Secure the beams and rafters to each other with the screws.
  5. Secure beams and rafters to the posts: Use screws to secure the beams and rafters to the posts that have been set in place.
  6. Paint: You can paint an easy DIY pergola kit to your liking. It can match the house in colour or compliment different elements of it because there is no one best way to paint a pergola.

Once the paint has dried, you can introduce the outdoor structure to your family and friends by hosting an outdoor get-together. You can also spend time working on your garden or catching up with friends while soaking up the sun. The use you get from the pergola is well worth the money spent building it.

How to build a pergola attached to the house

If building a freestanding pergola sounds too complicated, you can build the pergola as an extension of your home. Due to the simplicity of pergola design, you’ll only need a few more materials to give it extra stability. Cheap pergola kits vary in quality. If you decide to go this route, you’ll find the following instructions helpful in attaching it to the house.

Using one side of the house as part of the structure, you’ll need fewer support beams. You’ll need first to cut the lumber. Next, drill holes before marking hanger holes. Finally, cut out the notches and secure the joints. Once these steps are complete, you can paint the wood and let it dry.

Additional tips on building a pergola

Building a pergola can be a great addition to your outdoor living space. Here are some tips to help you out when building your own pergola:

  • When planning your pergola, keep in mind that a continuous span is ideal, as it creates a cleaner and more finished look.
  • Pergola battens are an essential part of the construction. Choose a type of wood that is sturdy, attractive, and weather-resistant to ensure long-lasting outdoor beauty.
  • When securing your pergola battens, consider using stainless steel screws or hooks, as this will give you the most durable and long-lasting solution.
  • Consider installing shade cloth or outdoor curtains for additional privacy and shade on hot summer days.

By following these building tips, you can create a beautiful and functional outdoor space that will provide shade and style for years to come. Ensure you have the right tools and materials, and always consult with a local contractor or building code for additional support.

How to hire a builder

Hiring a qualified builder is among the most important decisions you will make if you don’t choose to DIY a pergola. How to install a dishwasher

How easy is it to install a dishwasher?

Installing a dishwasher for the first time can be intimidating. However, the process is possible for a DIYer if the right steps are followed.

How to remove a dishwasher

If you are faced with removing a dishwasher, the following steps should be followed to ensure an easy DIY dishwasher install.

Prepare the area

Your dishwasher should be located close to the kitchen sink. Clear out the area beneath the kitchen sink, the countertop immediately above the dishwasher and at least 5′ floor space in front of the dishwasher. Line the floor area with a drop sheet or other material to prevent scratching the immediate area when the dishwasher is pulled out.

Disconnect water & power

Open the cabinet located under the kitchen sink. You will notice three lines coming from the direction of the dishwasher. One of these will be an electrical cord that is plugged into an outlet. This is the first and most important part of how to disconnect a dishwasher.

Drain hoses under the sink

The second line will be a water line. Follow this line to a shut-off valve and turn to stop the water flow. The last line will be the drain line. Follow it to clamps that are holding it in place. Remove any clamps or other hardware that is keeping the line secure.

Remove dishwasher from its place

There should be a removable plate below the front door of the dishwasher. Remove this panel and look for any bolts and screws that may need to be removed. Notice a water line attached inside the panel. Disconnect the coupling on this line with a small wrench. You can then slide the dishwasher out from its place.

Replacing an existing dishwasher is possible to do yourself / Source: Shakeadog Photography

How to replace an existing dishwasher

Once the old existing dishwasher has been removed, the new one needs to be hooked up and made operable.

  1. Unpack new dishwasher and adjust feet: Remove your new dishwasher from the packaging and adjust the feet for a proper balance. A dishwasher plumbing installation follows the same rules as the above steps, but in reverse.
  2. Connect water, waste, and power lines: Line up the dishwasher with the space under the cabinet. Leave enough room to reach into the opening and locate the three lines that will be attached to the new unit. Maneuver the cables through the space under the sink. Allow enough slack to prevent the lines to become tangled behind the cabinets. First, connect the water line by sliding the hose into the valve. Hand tighten clockwise until snug. The next step can either be plugging in the power cord or adding the drain hose. The drain hose installation can be tricky if you are connecting the dishwasher drain hose for the first time. A U-bend should have been packed with the new unit. This is used to carry the drain hose as high as possible to avoid a siphon effect. Once in place, tighten down the hose with a clamp.
  3. Slide new dishwasher in place & secure with screws: Make sure the feet are level against the floor, and there is no rocking. You may have to pull the unit out to adjust the feet. When comfortable with the placement, secure to the countertop with screws.
  4. Turn on power and water: Plug the power cord in and open the water valve. Run an entire cycle and watch for any leaks or problems under the sink with the lines.

How to install a dishwasher where there was none prior

Installing a dishwasher in existing cabinets may sound like an easy job, but there has to be plumbing, electrical and carpentry work to consider.

Contact local plumbers

Required tools & materials

You will need a lot more tools and equipment to install a dishwasher where there was none. Some of these include:

  • A drop sheet
  • Drill
  • Crowbar
  • New tap and drain connections
  • power cabling for a power outlet

Remove cabinets to create space for the dishwasher

This step can be done by the DIYer without much difficulty. There only needs to be enough space for threading hoses into the under sink cabinet.

Install drainage, water and power cables in the adjacent cabinet

If you have little knowledge of installing a plug in with the required voltage for a dishwasher, it is time to seek help from an electrician. The same applies to tapping into water lines and drains, as you will need a plumber to help you do this.

Install a new dishwasher using the steps above

Once the lines have been created to attach to the new unit hoses and lines, the same steps as replacing a dishwasher will complete the installation.

How to hire a plumber

Researching problems that can occur when adding a dishwasher may change your mind on hiring a plumber. How to connect a dishwasher is simple for a licensed plumber.

Licensing and qualifications

Each state has specific licensing and registration requirements to be able to operate as a plumber. Many times a plumber has worked under the supervision of practical training or received an AQF (Australian Qualifications Framework)certificate III or IV. Contact the plumbing authority in your state for a list of documentation to ask for:

Reputation and experience

Earning a reputation for giving excellent service and being well-educated often comes with a full calendar. However, it is usually worth the wait. Holding a positive presence in the community is also a winning signal that you have found a good plumber.

A written quote

A plumber can charge between $50 to $250 an hour. Depending on the amount of work that needs to be done to install your dishwasher, the price could run several hundred dollars. Replacing a dishwasher is an easy task for someone with handyman skills. However, when starting from scratch or wanting to locate the unit further away from a sink, a new set of problems could arise. It is a good idea to balance your skills against a plumber when experience is needed.

DIY the perfect paved area

What are the benefits of having a paved area?

Pavers are an excellent way to add space to your backyard for gathering. They make a smooth, solid surface for benches, outdoor chairs, and outdoor grills. You can use them to create paths and add structure to the landscape design. Many different types of pavers are available, including brick, sandstone, and specialty concrete. Many people choose to install backyard pavers as a DIY project. This guide to DIY paving made easy will give you the basics.

What tools and materials do I need for paving?

You can find patio pavers that give it a formal look or a more rustic, casual one. If you choose the DIY paver installation, here are a few tools that you need to have on hand. Depending on the paver base, some of these supplies needed might change. Here are some of the items that you will need before you begin.

Paver supplies

  • String line
  • Paver sand
  • Marker paint
  • Paver sealer
  • Pavers
  • Concrete (optional)
  • Gap sand

Tools

  • Rubber mallet
  • Brick or concrete saw
  • Wooden stakes for markers
  • Measuring tape

Preparing to lay pavers

Now that you have your supplies and equipment together, you are ready to begin. Here are the basic steps for laying pavers on sand. It might be noted that laying pavers on soil is not recommended because they will shift and move over time.

  1. Measure the area’s size and shape. The first thing that you need to do is to determine the location, size, and shape of your paver area. Mark the edges of the area with stakes and string between them. The area can be any shape that you wish.
  2. Choose a paving pattern. The next thing that you need to do is to design the paver area. You can find plenty of ideas online. You can use one type of paver for a uniform look or a combination for a custom look.
  3. Contact your local council for approval. Next, you need to contact your local council and supply them with your plans for any approval processes that are necessary for your local area.
  4. Clear the chosen area. Once you have approval, clear the areas of anything that is in the way. This includes perennial plants, sod, bushes, or trees. Next, you need to dig down a few inches and excavate the entire area. Make it as smooth as possible.
  5. Prepare the ground with sand, gravel, or concrete. Next, put down a layer of sand, gravel, or concrete. The proper way to install pavers is to use a base of sand or gravel for stability. Laying pavers on concrete is another popular method. Laying pavers on soil is not recommended, but if you do, use a plate compactor to tamp down the soil as much as possible.

How to lay pavers

Next, it is time to start installing the pavers. Here are the steps.

  1. Set up a string line. When you first did the preliminary plan, you set up stakes and strings. Now, it is time to make sure they are solid and exactly where you want them. These will be your guide for laying the pavers.
  2. Lay mortar mix and the first row of pavers. Laying the first row is the most important because it will set the spacing for the rest of the project. Take your time and get this one right.
  3. Use a spirit level and mallet after laying each paver. When placing pavers on top of concrete or laying pavers on a sand and cement mix, you need to use the mallet to tamp them down until they are level. If you do not, you can create a tripping hazard.
  4. Continue laying the next rows. Now, continue laying the next rows following your plan. Make sure to tamp and level each one as you go.
  5. Cut pavers for the edges. The final step is to cut and place the pavers for the edges. Once this is finished, sweep sand over the pavers to fill in the cracks and add stability.
  6. Let the pavers set. Allow the pavers to settle for at least a week before attempting to walk on them or use them. You might need to tamp some of them down again to make them level. Now, you wash them off with a hose and apply several coats of sealer.

How to cut pavers

Cutting pavers must be done carefully so that they do not crack or splinter and cause harm. You can cut pavers with a hammer and chisel. Use a pencil or marker to draw a line all the way around the brick or paver. You will need to score all four sides. Use the edge of the chisel to score a groove around the paver. Now, you can use a larger chisel to continue chipping away until the paver is the right size and shape. You could also use a paver or concrete saw to cut the pavers. Make sure to use a diamond masonry blade and wear proper safety protection.

How to lay brick pavers on grass

Laying pavers on sand is the preferred method. If you choose to lay brick pavers on grass, make sure to kill the grass with a poison. Before laying the brick, compact the soil with a plate compactor. Using paver sand is the recommended method because over time, even if you use grass killer, eventually weeds will grow between the cracks.

How to calculate how many pavers you need

Here are the steps for calculating the number of pavers that you need.

  1. Multiply the length by the width of the paver area in centimetres. This will give you the total square centimetres. If the area is not square or rectangular, measure it at the widest point. You can also break the area into sections and add them together.
  2. Next, measure the width and length of the paver and multiply them together. For instance, a standard brick is 21.5 cm x 11.25 cm, which equals 241.9 cm.
  3. Now, divide the total square centimetres of the paving area by the square centimetres for each paver, and you will have the approximate number of bricks or pavers that will be needed.
  4. It is usually recommended that you purchase between 5-10% extra for breakage. If you find out that you do not have enough, finding a perfect match can be difficult, so it is usually best to buy a few extra.

How to hire a paver

As you can see, the process for creating a paved area in your yard has many steps, and it is hard work. If this is your first time, you might not be satisfied with your outcome. This is why hiring an experienced paver installer might be the best option. Here are some tips for hiring the right person for the job.

Licencing and qualifications

Pavers who do hardscaping and pavers or pour hard outdoor surfaces might need special licences in some circumstances. For instance, they might need a licence for laying a poured concrete foundation. They might need a bricklaying licence for a brick patio. In some cases, they might need a landscaping licence. The best pavers in Australia have a certificate in paver installation. This certificate takes six months of coursework to complete.

How to unblock a toilet

How do I know if my toilet is blocked?

While a blocked toilet is a hassle, it can usually be fixed easily. The first step is to determine if the toilet is actually blocked, and then you can try several methods for a blocked toilet fix. It would help if you first looked at how the toilet drains. A clogged toilet will drain water slowly after it has been flushed. Blocked toilets will also sometimes make a gurgling noise or even overflow after they are flushed. You may also notice a foul odour coming from the toilet or bathroom. Outside, you may see water and toilet paper around the relief gully in your yard.

How to unclog a toilet with a plunger

To unblock a toilet, use either a standard plunger or a plunger with a flange. The flange fits snugly over the hole in your toilet bowl, which gives you more suction power. Because plunging can be a dirty job, you want to wear disposable gloves and use old drop cloths. Place the cloths on the floor around the toilet in case there is overflow. Insert the plunger into the blow. If your plunger has a flange, be sure the flange goes into the drain hole. Hold the plunger so that the handle points straight up. Push the plunger forcefully up and down and do not hold it at an angle. You may need to push up and down for about twenty seconds. A plunger is a commonly used tool to unblock a toilet, and this is because it’s a convenient and inexpensive way to fix a toilet not flushing. Plunging a toilet is also easy and doesn’t require the services of a professional plumber.

A plunger is one of the easiest ways to unblock a toilet / Source: Shutterstock

How to unblock a toilet without a plunger

How to unblock a toilet with baking soda

Start by pouring a cup of baking soda into your toilet, and then chase it with a mixture of two cups of hot water with two cups of white vinegar. Let it sit for about thirty minutes, and after that time the clog will generally come loose, and you can flush the toilet as usual.

How to unblock a toilet with hot water

Fill a kitchen pot with hot water from the tap. Pour the water into the toilet bowl, and if it starts to drain, then the blocked toilet drain is fixed.

How to use a coat hanger on a clogged toilet

Unwind a wire coat hanger so that it’s straight except for the hook, and then wrap a tiny rag around your hook to prevent scratches on the inside of the toilet bowl. Put on disposable gloves and put the hook down the drain to find and remove the clog.

How to use a sewer snake on a toilet (aka an auger)

Put the auger’s cable into the toilet, aim it toward the back drain and then crank the handle in a clockwise motion to release and extend the cable into the drain. Once you have reached the clog, pull back on the snake; you’ll feel resistance when you have hooked the clog, and you should turn the crank in the other direction to pull the clog out, which is the easiest way to use an auger for toilet clogs.

How to use a chemical toilet unblocker

Remove the drain stopper and pour the drain unblocker steadily and slowly into the clogged toilet. Be sure to follow all safety instructions on the label, and be sure to wear gloves and open windows when using any acidic or caustic chemicals.

Is it bad to leave a clogged toilet overnight?

Some people don’t know how to fix a blocked toilet or even how to use a plunger. In these cases, the person might leave the toilet blocked with paper overnight. While some people claim that a toilet left alone overnight can unclog itself, it’s probably not best to leave a toilet clogged. The last thing you want is to leave a running or leaking toilet sitting for hours at a time. The toilet could overflow and cause water damage to your floors. In the worst of scenarios, you might even flood the room and get toilet water leaking into other rooms or spaces as well. The cleanup could take hours, and the damage to your property can be pretty extensive. It’s best not to risk it.

How to hire a plumber

A licensed plumber is a well-versed toilet unblocker. A plumber will know how to fix a slow draining toilet and how to fix a blocked toilet. However, knowing how to plunge a toilet and the best way to unblock a toilet yourself will save you money. Plumber’s fees typically can cost between $50 to $200 per hour, depending on where you live in Australia. To save that money, you could try the hot water method or vinegar and baking soda or one of the other methods above before you call a plumber.

Source: Iconic Renovations

Licencing and qualifications

Specific government authorities govern the licensing of plumbers in Australia. Regional authorities oversee both the issuance and renewal of licences. To get a licence, plumbers must typically do the following:

  • Complete all required and accredited courses in the field.
  • Must complete vocational, on-the-job work experience.
  • The plumber must also have an approved qualification.

The specific state or territory regulates the profession in Australia. Plumbers can receive a variety of classes of licences. The specific class depends on the local government requirements in terms of the type of work to be performed. It is unlawful for a plumber to carry out work that is not specified by his or her licence class. For instance, one plumber might need a particular licence to install drains.

Preparation for building a DIY greenhouse

There are several important steps you should take in preparation for learning how to build a greenhouse in your backyard. Here are a few key steps for building a small greenhouse either using greenhouse kits or making a homemade greenhouse.

Take note of sun exposure and direction

The orientation and sitting of a greenhouse are significant. Typically greenhouses are oriented north-south to maximize light interception. Be aware of how shadows cast by equipment, gutters and trusses can lead to the crops getting uneven light exposure as that can impact their growth.

Pick a spot with good drainage

Ensure the spot you choose for your greenhouse is level, moist and well-drained. This allows for the cultivation of a wide array of plants and will prevent root rot.

Option to purchase a kit

If you want a high-quality greenhouse, but don’t have the skills or expertise to build one from scratch, you have the option to purchase affordable greenhouse kits. You can use kits to build strong and durable greenhouses quickly.

What tools and materials you will need

The process for how to build a greenhouse out of wood or metal framing in your backyard requires several types of tools and materials.

Contact local builders

Tools

  • Spirit level: To ensure all flooring, shelves, work areas and roofing is level.
  • Tape measure: To accurately measure the greenhouse area, framing, flooring, shelving, roofing and wall materials.
  • Large carpenter’s square: For ensuring right-angle legs are perpendicular to the base, angles from labelled pivot point are accurate. Additionally, this determines roof pitch, plot angles for roofs, and ensures walls are joined together at right angles.
  • Electric drill-driver: To insert screws in flooring, walls and roof.
  • Phillips head screwdriver: To insert or remove Phillips head screws.
  • Shovel or spade: To dig, holes and shallow trenches to make positioning bearers easier.
  • Framing gun: Used to attach the parts of the frame to each other.
  • Staple gun: Used to connect plastic sheeting to the frame.
  • Foil fixers: Place between the staples and the plastic sheeting to prevent tearing.

Materials

  • Lightweight aluminium, steel, plastic tubing or treated pine: Used to build the framing
  • Clear polyethylene film, glass, acrylic, polycarbonate, fibreglass or plastic sheeting: Used for the walls and roof
  • Screws
  • Treated pine planks, gravel or cement: Used for flooring and shelving
  • Framing studs
  • Lengths of wood or metal: Cut to the height of the greenhouse walls.
  • Sleepers or bearers
  • Gate/door hinges: To attach the door to the greenhouse structure
  • Lengths of timber or metal: Laid directly on the ground and used to support the flooring structure

How to build a greenhouse

  1. Cut timber: Cut the timber to be used for the frame and flooring or get precut metal for the frame.
  2. Build and secure the floor frame: Make a rectangle the size of the floor you want using sleepers or bearers on the level area. Fix them together using screws. Attach timber planks to the bearers using bugle screws to complete the floor frame.
  3. Build the front frame: Join the measured and precut lengths of wood or metal together in a rectangular using screws to connect them and hold them in place to make the front frame. Lay out the door frame and fix it to the front frame using the framing gun.
  4. Secure the studs: Put studs 45 centimetres apart and attach them securely to the outside of the frame.
  5. Build back and side frames: Using precut lengths of wood or metal, build the frames for the greenhouse’s back and sidewalls.
  6. Secure plastic sheets to the frames: Wrap plastic sheeting over the frames. Pull it tight to each frame. Use staple gun and foil fixers to attach the plastic sheets to the frames.
  7. Attach the door: Attach the door hinges to the side studs on the front frame using screws. Put a bolt on the door and a bolt pad on the adjacent front frame stud.
  8. Secure frames in place: Attach the front, sides and back to the base frame using screws or framing gun.
  9. Build and attach the roof: Build a roof frame using precut wood or metal. Attach the roof to the frame with screws or framing gun. Connect plastic sheeting or polycarbonate roofing to the roof frame with roofing screws. Make sure it’s smooth and firmly in place and your homemade greenhouse is complete!

Get rid of ants in your house

What causes an ant infestation?

The most common reason why you see ants in your house is that you have a food source for them. Ants can survive on tiny crumbs in your kitchen as well as the food your kids and pets leave behind. You might have an infestation on your hands due to the moisture that the bugs need. Not only are they attracted to your pet’s water dish, but ants can also pull moisture from wet or damp wood. While garden and green ants are common in Australia, you may see other types, including:

  •  Blackhouse ants
  •  Sugar ants
  •  Pavement ants
  •  White-footed house ants
  •  Fire ants

How to get rid of ants naturally

Create ant bait

The best way to get rid of ants might be with homemade ant bait. Combine equal parts borax and sugar before sprinkling the mixture around your home. The sweet smell of the sugar attracts the ants, but the borax kills them. You should keep borax ant bait away from pets and children as it is not safe for them to consume.

Use sprays to deter ants

When you look at how to get rid of ants in the house, you can learn how to deter them and make them avoid your house. Natural sprays are easy to make and use. Peppermint is available in an essential oil form and only requires a few drops of oil mixed with water and pour into a spray bottle. If you have distilled white vinegar on hand, use one part of the vinegar to two parts water and use it in a spray bottle. You can also try pepper. Both black pepper and spicy peppers work when mixed with water or vinegar. Apply the solution around your home, making sure to focus on the areas where you saw ants.

How to get rid of ants in the kitchen

Immediately clean up food scraps

As any food scraps will attract Australian ants, it’s important to try to clean them up as soon as possible. You should also empty the trash into the outside bin regularly.

Food scraps are a common cause of attracting ants / Source: Shutterstock

Use sealed containers

Another great tip on how to stop ants is to use sealed containers. Ants have a keen sense of smell and can smell food in containers that are not air-tight. Sealed containers made from glass or plastic block out food odours and prevent ants from getting to that food.

Leave out strong-smelling herbs

Finding a natural ant repellent is as easy as looking at the herbs in your garden. Strong-smelling herbs make your home smell nice at the same time that they repel ants. Rosemary and lavender are two of the best herbs to use. You can also try thyme and peppermint. If you have cats, consider planting some catnip. It repels ants as it grows and becomes a fun treat when you dry it.

Spray vinegar inside your bin

One of the top home remedies for ants is vinegar. Both apple cider and distilled white vinegar work equally well when sprayed in your bins. Bins are a buffet for ants, especially if you don’t rinse the bin or clean it every week. They can survive on the smallest of food scraps clinging to the bin and any crumbs that get outside. Simply spray the vinegar inside the bin and let it sit. The strong odour of the vinegar will repel the ants.

Rinse pet food bowls

Learning how to keep ants away from your home will require that you clean up after your pets, too. Instead of leaving food sitting out all day, get your pets on a schedule where you feed them at set times throughout the day. After they finish eating, throw away any of the food that they left behind and rinse out their bowls. You should also keep dry food stored in sealed containers.

How to get rid of ants outside

Boiling water

Boiling water is one of the easiest ways to get rid of ants naturally outside. Ants live inside nests that look like small hills in your yard. Once you find a nest, you can get rid of the ants with plain boiling water. The easiest way to do this is boiling a kettle and pouring it directly on the nest. Not only will the water kill the ants in the nest, but it will remove the scent trail that surviving ants use to get between the nest and your home.

Vinegar

Another easy DIY ant killer that you can try outside is plain vinegar. Check your lawn and garden for anthills before grabbing a bottle of vinegar. It’s usually easier to apply the vinegar with a spray bottle than straight from the bottle. Spray enough vinegar on the anthill that you saturate the surface. Though you can use equal parts water and vinegar, straight vinegar is much stronger and gets the job done faster. The smell of the vinegar turns off the ants and causes them to seek a new home. If you find that one application of vinegar fails to kill the ants or make them leave, try using multiple applications.

Contact local pest control experts

Lawn ant killer

While chemical lawn ant killers aren’t safe to use around pets, they will eliminate your ant problem and usually work with only one application. Depending on the product that you buy, you may want to wear goggles and other gear to stay safe while using the substance. Liquid killers are easy to use and work on both the ants inside your home and any anthills that you see outside. You can also use bait products that infect ants that eat the bait. They carry the bait back to the nests and kill the other ants.

How to hire a pest control expert

Out of control infestation

If you’re tired of searching the web for tips on how to get rid of ants and want to take care of the problem as soon as possible, now might be the time to hire a pest control expert. Experts will spend some time in your house to find out why you have ants and the severity of the problem. They also let you know about the best remedies and how much each one costs.

Licensing and qualifications

Whether you want a pet safe ant killer or need to eliminate anthills outside, make sure that the pest control expert you hire has the right licensing and qualifications. Australian pest control experts need to take courses in the field and any special areas where they want to work. They also need a pest control license, which usually requires that they apply for one and show their qualifications.

DIY: How to paint a ceiling

Painting your ceilings is a terrific way to elevate your home’s aesthetic appeal. After all, the ceiling can be considered your fifth wall. Even without repainting all your walls or revamping your furniture, you can dramatically change a space by touching up the ceiling.

In this guide, we’ll take you through how to paint a ceiling and share a few tricks to make the most of your painting project. It takes a few steps and a few hours on a stepladder, but the results will be worth it.

Tools you’ll need for painting ceilings

Unsure about what paint roller to use for ceilings and what kind of paint to use? Here are the tools you’ll need to get started with your DIY project:

  • Stepladder
  • Drop sheets, plastic sheeting and painter’s tape
  • Protective gear (e.g., goggles, a dust mask, overalls)
  • Ceiling brush or broom
  • Interior putty
  • Putty knife
  • Sanding pole
  • 22-cm (9-inch) paint roller frames
  • Paint roller covers
  • Paint roller tray and roller extension pole
  • 5 to 7-cm (2 to 3-inch) angled brushes
  • Stain-blocking primer
  • Your choice of paint

You’ll also need to allot around a day to paint a regular-sized (40 sqm.) ceiling. This includes a couple of hours for prep work, around 30–60 minutes to prime, 30–60 minutes to apply the first coat, and 2–4 hours to wait for this first coat to dry. You can do touch-ups or a second coat as needed. Lastly, you’ll need time to let it set and clean up.

A step-by-step guide to painting your ceilings

Once you have all your tools ready, it’s time to prep and paint! Here’s a beginner-friendly guide on how to paint a ceiling.

Step 1: Preparation

First off, put on your safety goggles, dust mask, and overalls. Get started in removing all the furniture and items in the room, or cover them with drop cloths and plastic sheets. Secure these in place with painter’s tape. If you’re painting an empty room and are doing the walls later on, you can skip this extensive masking.

If you have ceiling fixtures such as lights and ceiling fans, turn the power off, then uninstall or cover all electricals.

Next, sweep or brush the ceiling to clear the dust and cobwebs. You could also use a mop and mild detergent to clean it thoroughly.

Spot any cracks or holes? Apply some interior putty to fill them. Afterwards, sand the whole ceiling down for an even surface.

Step 2: Priming

Prepping the surface before painting | Source: iStock

The best way to paint a ceiling involves priming.

If your ceiling is pretty much stain-free, use any stain-blocking primer. But if there are already splotches, you’ll want to get an oil-based primer for water stains or a shellac-based primer to address other stains.

Use the angled brush to cut into the ceiling. “Cutting into” means outlining the edges and corners of the ceiling. Make 4 to 6 cm-wide strips of primer all around the ceiling. Then, apply primer to the rest of the ceiling.

Step 3: Cutting into the edges

Check if the primer is dry. Once it’s all good, get another angled brush, your chosen ceiling paint, then cut into the edges, just like you did with the primer. Use a brush to fill the corner with paint, then make a straight line along the edge of the ceiling. You should end up with a nice 4 to 6-cm wide border to fill in at the next step.

Step 4: Painting the rest of your ceiling

While the edges of your ceiling are still wet, start on the middle portion.

Imagine your ceiling is a grid with many little sections. Pick a section near one corner to start with a wet edge. This helps avoid streakiness and brush marks.

But before you go trigger-happy with your paint, here’s how to properly paint a ceiling with a roller:

  • First, load the paint onto the paint tray. Dip the roller into the deep portion, then run it across the tray several times to spread the paint evenly.
  • Lay the roller on the unpainted portion of the ceiling, then run it towards the wet edge with light pressure. Roll slowly, overlapping each stroke. You’ll also want to change the direction of your rolling–go in rows, columns, and zigzags for an even coat.
  • Once you’re done with one section, move on to the next part, ensuring you roll towards the last wet edge.

Try to finish painting the ceiling in one session to ensure uniform drying and minimise streaks.

Afterwards, wait two to four hours or until the paint is completely dry. Keeping the windows open can help speed up the drying process.

Step 5: Additional coats and touch-ups

This step is optional. But if you’re using a bright colour or flat white, going for another coat can help improve coverage.

The key here is to roll in a direction perpendicular to the first coat to even the paint out.

Once your ceiling is dry and ready for inspection, check the whole area for missed spots. Carefully brush paint onto these spots, then blend them out with a roller. For streaky areas, use the sander to sand these down before reapplying paint.

How to paint the cornices on a ceiling

If the room has cornices or coving, you should use a brush since this will give a more even wash of colour versus a roller.

Begin by cutting in at the edges with a brush and some primer, just as you would with a regular flat ceiling or wall. Apply primer to the rest of the cornice after cutting in.

Let the primer coat dry completely, then apply the paint. Flat or matte paints are popular, especially since glossy paints can highlight imperfections in the cornice’s designs later on. If needed, use smaller paintbrushes to get into the cornice’s nooks and crannies.

The dos and don’ts of painting ceilings

Now you know the basic steps. But that’s not all there is! These rules for painting ceilings will make the process easier save time and money, and could even help you avoid accidents.

DO’s

  • DO paint the room from the top down, starting with the ceiling and ending with the walls.
  • DO get help when working with electricals on your ceiling, such as when removing or reinstalling your ceiling fan.
  • DO use painter’s tape to mask around the edges for straight lines when you “cut.”
  • DO have rags on hand for drips and splatters.
  • DO choose your ceiling colour wisely. Dark colours look dramatic and make the room feel cosier, but they may make rooms feel smaller. Light colours give the illusion of more space. They’ll also reflect more light.
  • DO choose a flat or matte colour to help hide defects in your ceiling.
  • DO “box” your paint for uniformity. If you’re using multiple cans of the same colour, you should pour them all into one large can or bucket to even out any minor colour differences.
  • DO maintain a wet edge while painting to hide roller or brush strokes.

DON’Ts

  • Don’t just use any roller cover. Use thin or “low nap” roller covers for smooth ceilings and thicker ones for textured ceilings.
  • DON’T forget safety equipment and precautions. Wear a dust mask and goggles to avoid paint or dust getting into your eyes or inhaling paint fumes. Also, keep the room as ventilated as possible.
  • DON’T attempt to deal with mould in the ceiling by yourself. Ask an expert instead about how to remove mould from the ceiling before painting it.
  • DON’T use too much or too little paint. Excess paint can cause splatters; too little can result in patches and streaks.
  • Don’t attempt to paint a high ceiling by yourself. For your safety, hire a pro instead.

Hiring a professional painter to do the work

Considering hiring a local painter to do your ceilings? This could be a good choice if you’re in a time crunch or simply don’t feel comfortable working so high up for hours.

Make sure your contractor is licensed and qualified. Ideally, they should be insured, too, so you can safeguard against any accidental damage to your property while they’re on the job. You can ask to see the painter’s license, qualifications, and insurance papers before you hire them.

As for painting quotations, you can request a written quote and timetable in advance. This avoids miscommunication and puts you both on the same page. If you’re still canvassing, avoid getting the offer with the lowest quote since this could mean low-quality products and less experience in the industry.

Don’t forget to ask the painter for references or reviews. You can call up these references, read online reviews, and even ask these former customers about the prospective painter’s performance.

Now that you know how to paint a ceiling, get ready to roll!

Painting a ceiling can be an exciting and fulfilling DIY project. Follow this handy guide, and you should be ready to redecorate your home.

But if you think it’ll be a challenge, hiring a pro painter is worth the cost, as they can get the outcome you like. You’ll get the revamped ceiling you’re looking for, plus a perfectly smooth paint job!

FAQs on painting ceilings

How many coats of paint do you need for a ceiling?

Most ceilings only require one coat of paint. But if you’re covering a darker ceiling with a brighter-coloured paint, you may need two to three coats of paint to get the best coverage.

Painting your walls in the same colour as your ceiling? You’ll need a lot more paint since walls typically need two coats, minimum.

How long should you wait to apply the second coat of paint?

You can safely apply a second coat after four hours. Most paint takes two to four hours to dry, but this can change depending on the weather, how well-ventilated your room is, and even the type of paint used.

How do I paint popcorn ceilings with a roller?

When dealing with popcorn ceilings and other textured ceilings, it’s best to use a thick paint roller cover. This holds more paint and distributes it better in the nooks and crannies.

A word of warning when dealing with popcorn ceilings: these may contain asbestos, a dangerous chemical. You may want to hire a professional who can test for asbestos before proceeding with your painting project.

How to build a deck

Adding a deck to your home is a great way to have a place for gathering and enjoying the outdoors. A deck can add value to your home and give you more living area. Many people choose to install a DIY deck in their home. This can be an excellent way to save money on labour. However, it often turns out to be a more complicated process than many anticipate in the beginning.

What do I need to do before I start building a deck?

Some areas of Australia require local council approval for you to build your deck. Before you begin sourcing materials, there are a few things that you need to do first.

Research deck building standards

The first step is to research deck standards in your area. They will differ, depending on where you live. It is best to research how to build a deck off a house before you begin any planning and approval work.

Take measurements and make a plan

Next, you will need to take measurements of the deck area, home attachment, and height. Make drawings because you will need them to submit to the council for approval.

Apply for council approval

Each locality has its own application and approval process. At a bare minimum, they will need to see your building plans, and you might need to pay a fee. Some local areas require periodic inspections at specific points along the building process.

Some of the items that council regulates on decks include the type of material that can be used, site setbacks from property lines, and construction standards. In some cases, you might need to meet special requirements in storm-prone, flood-prone, and bushfire-prone areas. They will also regulate stairs, handrails, and height.

What materials and equipment do I need to build a deck?

Once you have council approval, it is now time to begin serious planning on how to make a deck and the things that you will need to do the job. Here are the bare minimum tools and materials that you need to consider having on hand.

Tools

  • Shovel
  • Hand or powered saw
  • Screwdriver or rachet set
  • Measuring taps
  • Hammer
  • T-square
  • Builder’s line
  • Electric drill and appropriate drill bits
  • Adjustable wrench
  • Bubble Level
  • Wooden stakes
  • Metal paint
  • Glue
  • Nail Gun
  • Fastener

Materials

  • 6×6 or 4×4 posts
  • Treated wood for floor joists
  • Treated band boards
  • Concrete mix
  • Carriage bolts for band board at the house
  • Carriage bolts for the beam at posts
  • Single joist hangers to attach joists to house band
  • Galvanized joist hanger nails
  • Galvanized ringed nails
  • Galvanized screws
  • Deck boards
  • Railing pickets
  • Railing boards
  • Stain and/or sealer

The amounts of these materials will differ according to the size of the project. Building a deck on the ground is much easier than building a raised deck in many ways. Here are the steps of how to build a timber deck at ground level.

How to build a deck

  1. Set out the deck plan: This is the most important step because a mistake here can spoil the entire project. Make sure everything is level and square. Make your lines with a builder’s line and spray paint. Take your time on this step and make sure that it is right.
  2. Install stumps and bearers: This phase creates the foundation. It must also be done correctly so that the deck will be sturdy. In some areas, you must have an inspector come out for an inspection once the holes for the stumps are dug before proceeding. When installing decking bearers and joists, Australian standards must be followed precisely.
  3. Install joists: Next, you can begin the framing process for the deck. These are the beams that will support the decking boards.
  4. Lay decking: This is the final part of the deck and is the part that people will see. Make sure to stagger the seams so that there are no two ends in a line.
  5. Seal deck: The last part of the process is to stain, paint, and seal your deck so that it will last for many years to come.

When installing deck framing, decking bearers, and joists, Australian standards must be followed for spacing and attachment methods.

How to build a deck on concrete

Building a deck on concrete is different from building one on the ground. Many homeowners choose to cover their concrete deck with something a little more attractive. You will need sleepers and concrete screws to attach the wood to the concrete. This will require special concrete drill bits, concrete screws, and other specialty fasteners. The posts are then attached to the sleepers, and the joists and decking are installed, just like any other deck project.

If you have an existing concrete patio, you can easily extend it with a wood deck to create the outdoor living space you’ve always wanted. Here are some tips on how to extend a concrete patio with a wood deck:

  1. First, measure the size of your concrete patio and calculate the size of the wood deck you want to build.
  2. Use a power washer to thoroughly clean the patio surface and allow it to dry fully before beginning construction.
  3. If the patio is not level, create a level surface by using leveling compound or installing a sleepers system.
  4. Install flashing around the patio’s perimeter to protect the wooden framing from getting wet.
  5. Begin building the deck using pressure-treated wooden beams as joists. Building on top of the concrete surface may require special care and usage of special fastening techniques to secure the wooden parts to concrete.
  6. Attach decking boards onto the joist with screws or hidden fasteners.
  7. Finally, add railings, stairs, and finishing details to complete the deck.

Extending a concrete patio with a wood deck can create a seamless transition from indoor to outdoor living areas. Be sure to consult with a local contractor or building code for additional support and guidance on building requirements to ensure a safe and sturdy end product. With the right tools and materials, you can have the outdoor living space of your dreams in no time.

How to build deck stairs

There are many different methods and techniques for building stairs. You can purchase pre-cut stringers, or you can cut them yourself with a saw. One method uses a series of stacked, framed boxes that are set on top of one another. You can also cut two boards and place the stringers and footing between them.

The most important tip is to make sure that there is not a significant difference between the tops and bottom steps, as this can cause a tripping hazard. When the steps are finished, you might need to install a secure handrail according to your local building codes. You will also want to consider installing a rough tread for better footing.

How to hire a decking expert

As you can see, building a deck frame is a complicated process. When it comes to deck construction guidelines, NSW and other territories have different requirements. If you do not have the skills, time, tools, and know local regulations, the process can be challenging. Many times, it is more cost-effective in the long run to hire a professional who can get the deck installation done quickly and professionally. This means that you can start enjoying your deck sooner and without the hassle.

Licencing and qualifications

The person that you hire will at least have to be a licenced builder. Australia has several different classifications of builders that include commercial, restricted residential, unrestricted residential, restricted to special structures, and other classifications. In your location, you might need to hire a specific type of builder for the job. Ask to make sure that the person you hire is not only licenced but that they are familiar with your local codes and regulations.

Before making your decision, be sure to call several different ones for a price quote. Make sure to ask for references and to see pictures of completed projects. Make sure that you understand what is included in any quotes that you receive, and don’t forget to ask if the builder offers a warranty with their work.

How to make your own pallet bed

Buying a new bed frame can cost hundreds of dollars, even if you choose a cheaper material. As long as you can find wood pallets and have some free time, you can use the right tools to build a new frame out of that recycled wood.

What is a pallet bed?

Whether you want to do your part and help the environment through recycling or save some money, consider making a bed from old pallets. This type of bed uses the pallets to create both the base and headboard. While basic designs are suitable for most DIY enthusiasts, you’ll find some complex and intricate designs that you can try too.

Sourcing out a pallet

Where can you find pallets?

Home improvement stores now sell pallets that you can take apart and put back together again. However, finding free pallets can help you save money on your project. The best place to find free pallets is through small business parks in your area. Distribution companies often give away pallets too. Don’t forget to use the internet to find companies giving away pallets.

How many pallets do you need?

The number of pallets that you need to make a wood pallet bed depends on the size that you need. For a queen size pallet bed, you need at least four. Complex and intricate designs, as well as those with a headboard, will need more pallets. You only need two wood pallets to make a twin bed.

How to choose safe pallets

Companies often use pallets treated with chemical solvents that protect the wood from water damage. To choose safe pallets, look for any letters stamped on the surface. The initials MB stand for methyl bromide and indicate that the pallets aren’t safe for home use. You can also buy pallets from home improvement stores that are brand new.

Turning a pallet into a bed frame

Learning how to make a pallet bed is easy when you know what steps to follow. Check out the steps below and make sure you understand what to do before you start

Sand and wipe down

To make a DIY pallet bed, you need to sand the pallets first. Even if you choose new pallets, sanding the wood is important because it gives the wood a smooth surface and reduces your risk of getting splinters. An electric sander is the best tool for the job because it fits in one hand and works quickly. Make sure that you wear protective gear when sanding, including a mask and goggles. After you finish sanding, wipe off the pallets to remove any excess wood dust.

Paint

You do not need to paint a pallet bed base, especially if you have longer blankets or plan to use a bed skirt. Painting lets you add a personal touch though and make the bed yours. If you decide to paint, choose between spray paint or a brush application. Brushes allow you to add just enough colour that you can still see the natural wood grain through the topcoat. Using spray paint ensures that you get the even coverage that you want and will completely hide the wood grain.

Contact local interior design experts

Secure the pallets together

For a basic DIY wood base, you only need four pallets. Place the pallets on the ground in a two by two layout. Though you do not need to secure the pallets for this type of bed, you may want to use screws to keep the pallets from shifting as you get in and out of bed. If you use wood screws, make sure that the screws are long enough to go through the wood in two pallets.

Securing the pallets is necessary if you want a bed with some height. As pallets are relatively short, you can stack two or more and get as high off the ground as you wish. Use a power tool to sink the screws through the top of one pallet into the pallet below.

When you get to the top level, put down some material that keeps your mattress from snagging on the wood. A thick piece of cardboard or some felt will work. Those who like sleeping on a firmer mattress can use a piece of plywood cut to the same size as the bed.

Create a pallet headboard

Though you don’t need a headboard for your bed, making one to go along with your wood pallet bed frame is as simple as securing a pallet to the wall. You’ll want to sand and paint the pallet to make it match the bed. Have someone hold the pallet flush against the wall as you sink wood screws through the surface and into the wall, which keeps the pallet bed headboard from falling. You can easily use the slats in the headboard as extra storage for everything from books and lights to clothing and decorations.

If you want to create a different look, try adding some fabric. Simply wrapping the wood in fabric before you hang it creates a fun and functional headboard. You can also secure slats of wood from a second pallet to the front of the headboard to create extra shelves. With another pallet, you can even make a matching footboard to go with your pallet bed base.

Optional decorations

Once you have a pallet bed frame, consider adding some optional decorations to make the bed look different from those that others created. You can go with something basic such as lights. Fairy lights add a nice touch of atmosphere and are small enough that you can weave them through the slats in the bed. If you don’t have a nearby outlet and don’t want to use an extension cord, look for fairy lights that run on a battery. Larger lights create a fantastic look too when suspended on the wall and above the bed. Twinkle lights placed inside the pallet below your bed adds a small amount of light also.

Decorations can include extra wood that you source from other pallets. Consider cutting down some of the slats and turning them into tiny bedside tables that attach to the side of the headboard. You’ll have more than enough space for a glass of water and your cell phone. Some create beds that include a built-in section on the base for storing their shoes or slippers. You may add cutouts to the wood that lets you run cables through the bed too. Those cutouts are perfect for charging your phone or powering a laptop.
