Mix dishwashing liquid with water (about two parts water to one part of dishwashing liquid) and spray it directly onto the wasp nest. The soapy solution will clog the wasps’ breathing holes, suffocating them.

Method 9: Sprinkle baby powder

Dust baby powder on the nest and other areas where wasps are frequent. The talc in it drives wasps away. One reason is that the fine dust that talc consists of can clog wasps’ respiratory systems, which can be found in their exoskeleton, like many other insects. This makes baby powder also effective for other pests like ants and spiders.

Tip #1: Fixing general cracks

General surface cracks are really common in driveways over four to five years old. While small cracks aren’t going to ruin your driveway, if not addressed, can lead to a much bigger problem.

The type of cracks a driveway has is do with the materials. For example, if your driveway is made of concrete it will be prone to hairline cracks, for example asphalt. Hairline cracks, are pretty easily sealed over, usually with sealant. Fortunately, this repair job is super cheap and will only take about 20 minutes.

The cracks that you want to be aware of are called, alligator cracks. They get the name alligator cracks because they end up looking like the scales of an alligator. Visually, these look terrible and practically, they can expand and grow over time making your problems ten times worse. Fortunately, they only occur where the asphalt or concrete is weak on your driveway. This means fixing the cracks is really no big deal.

The solution

All you really have to do with these types of cracks are cut out and remove the affected area and re-seal it. Make sure the reseal is the same colour as the surface and that it’s levelled to prevent the replacement looking out of place.

Tip #2: Staining your driveway

Staining your driveway is one of the easiest ways to give your driveway a nice new look. This tip is for concrete driveways only. Applying a staining solution pretty much the same as staining a piece of wood.

All you need are the following four things:

  • Broom
  • Paint Roller & Paint Tray
  • Driveway Stain
  • Some Good Weather

We recommend using water-based stains over acid stains because means the better range of colours you can get. Concrete stain is a bit different to paint, as instead of just sitting on the driveway’s surface, the stain permeates into the concrete. This causes the stain to fuse with the concrete rather than just sit on top.

The solution

All you really have to do is sweep off your driveway and make sure there is no rubble, and as little dust as possible. Then, pour your concrete stain into your paint tray and apply the stain to a roller.

Make sure you work backwards from the bottom up to ensure that you are not walking over the work you have already done. Usually, the stain will dry within one day. However, make sure you read the instructions on your stain as all types are different.

Tip #3: Bring in the plant life

Simply putting in some plant life along the sides of your driveway can make a world of difference.

What we have found to make a big difference is placing fresh grass seed along the edges of a driveway. Once this fills in, it should come right up to the edges replacing an area that is typical pretty barren.

For some, the lack of grass on the surrounding edges of your driveway might not even be an issue. But for those that it is, and who are wondering why this is, here is the answer:

If you driveway does not have appropriate drainage channels, water will tend to run off to edges and onto the soil. This water will pool and, over time, erode the surrounding grass. While filling in the grass is not a long-term solution, it can act as a temporary fix.

If you intend to do a bit more heavy-duty garden work, such as planting some trees or thick bushes, be mindful of the root growth. As time goes on, tree and bush roots will burrow underneath your driveway. These can lead to general cracking in the future and eventually undermine the entire driveway.

Line the sides of your driveway with some LED lights.

Typically, this is something you want to do while your driveway is being constructed. That way, you can embed them into the concrete or asphalt. This will make the lights and the driveway look one and the same.

How to build a backyard chicken coop

How to build a chicken coop DIY

If this is your first time building a coop and you do not have a lot of experience with these projects, it might be best to purchase pre-made plans.

  1. Cut all the required timber: The first thing you need to do is cut all of the required lumber to the proper size. Make sure to do this carefully and follow all safety precautions. To ensure precision, measure twice and cut once.
  2. Assemble the side and back supports: You may choose to use posts set in concrete to do this. If you do not, make sure that the posts are secure and that the soil around them is compacted. You can also purchase special brackets specially designed for this purpose.
  3. Assemble the roosting box: Hens typically do not sleep in the same place as they lay. Also, roosters need their own space within the coop. The roosting box typically consists of four wood pieces that are nailed or screwed together, forming a square.
  4. Assemble the nesting box: Hens need a special nesting box to lay eggs and brood chicks. Constructing the nesting box is similar to constructing the roosting box. 
  5. Attach the outdoor area: Now it is time to attach the wire mesh to the outside of the coop and create the outdoor daytime area. When doing this, pay extra attention to ensuring that it is secure and will keep predators and rodents out. 
  6. Assemble and attach the walls: Now, you can connect the side walls recording to the plans. Make sure to close any gaps so that the coop will be protected from the weather and keep pests out.
  7. Cut and attach the flooring. Cut and attach the flooring to the floor joist assembly. One tip is to attach hardware cloth to the flooring’s underside before laying it down. This helps to prevent rodents and small predators from getting into the coop. They cannot chew through the hardwire cloth, but they will try to chew through a hardwood floor. 
  8. Create and assemble the door: Now it is time to assemble the door and attach it to the coop with hinges. 
  9. Cut and attach cladding: The main coop area’s last step is to connect the outside cladding. Once again, using a hardwire cloth on the inside will help secure the main coop area from rodents and pests.
  10. Install ramp and chicken wire: Although most chickens can manage short flights, many require a ramp to get into the coop. You should make sure that it is non-slip, not something that they will not try to peck and swallow, and it must have steps made from boards attached to the plank to prevent slipping.
  11. Create and attach the roof: The last part of the major construction is to attach the roof. Make sure to use roofing felt and either shingles or aluminium roofing materials. 
  12. Create and attach a nesting box roof: The final touches include attaching a roof to the nesting box. Hens like to feel like they are in a cozy, secured area. They should have enough room to stand up and move around, but most of the time, they will only be in this area for a short time while they are laying eggs unless they are brooding.

Types of hot tubs

Much like pools, there are two types of spas: in ground, and above ground. In-ground spas can be placed either at surface level or on a specially constructed deck. On the other hand, above-ground spas are like bathtubs and are placed above ground. Both come in a variety of shapes and sizes. Some can seat up to six, while others are 4-metre long swimming spas.

The most common types of spas are:

  • Portable Spa – Relatively inexpensive and, as the name suggests, these spas are portable.
  • Swim Spa – These spas are designed for swimming in place, similar to the way you would run on a treadmill. They tend to be longer and narrower with high-pressure jests at one end of the pool.
  • Therapeutic Spa – These are designed for hydrotherapy.

In-ground spas

In-ground spas, as the name suggests, is installed into the ground usually next to an in-ground pool. This style is more customisable, and can fit more easily into your space’s aesthetic.

Portable & semi-portable spas

Another option to consider, particularly if you don’t have a pool is an above-ground portable or semi-portable hot tub. Semi-portable hot tubs aren’t exactly portable – they usually weigh between 180 and 450 kilograms, but they are easier to move and to install. The largest regular hot tubs can take a crane to install, so a semi-portable definitely has advantages.

Actual portable hot tubs are inflatable and can weigh as little as 42 kilograms and fold up pretty compactly. And they can be pretty well featured; a higher-end model may have 136 bubble jets, heat up to 42 degrees Celsius, and seat up to six people. Some even have built-in filtration systems! Inflatable hot tubs cost around $1000.

Spa maintenance

An ordinary bathtub needs to be drained after every use, but a spa has a filtration system and chemicals to keep it clean. However, you will need to periodically drain the spa for cleaning and maintenance. These procedures vary slightly between brands and models, so it’s a good idea to ask about the particular maintenance requirements before purchasing a new spa.

Keep the water chemically balanced

Micro-organisms grow quickly in warm water, so it’s crucial to check the water every day and use additives when necessary. Check the pH level. It should read 7.4 ppm (or parts per million), allowing for a variation of minus or plus .2 ppm. A too-low pH level can corrode the filter and the pipes while a too-high level can cause algae and bacteria to grow.

Add chemicals as and when required to maintain the desired pH and alkaline levels. Most spa owners use chlorine or bromine in their water. Another beneficial technique that can help keep your spa water from turning cloudy and unattractive is to shock the spa water frequently. • Water clarifiers are a valuable additive because they solidify oils, which can then be removed through the filtration system.

Check the filter

A clean filter is essential to prevent debris building up and the water from turning cloudy. The spa’s filtration system needs to be kept in good shape, with proper use and regular maintenance. Check your filter at least once a week, cleaning it whenever necessary – usually monthly – and replacing it once a year. If you use the spa very frequently, you may have to clean or replace the filter more often.

At least every two weeks, pressure clean the filter with a garden hose or power washer set at a low or medium level; don’t use high pressure, as it may cause damage. When the filter is dry, brush it to remove loose particles of debris. Keep your filtration system running for three or four hours daily, whether you’re using the spa or not.

Avoid oil & soap

If you use the spa wisely and carefully, you can keep it clean for longer. Do not enter the water with oil, soap, sunscreen, deodorants or other products on your body or hair, since these make the water cloudy and dirty. In this case, you will need to overwork the spa filter to get rid of these impurities. It is a good idea to tie up your hair or use a plastic cap while in the spa. Avoid using soap or an ammonia-based agent to clean the spa, since these products can affect the chemical balance of the water in your spa. Amending garden & lawn soil

When can you add wood ash?

When you cannot add wood ash

  • Avoid adding ash when the soil is alkaline. Alkaline soil has a pH level of more than 7.0. Adding ash can also be bad for the health of plants and can potentially kill some of your plants. When soil pH levels are too high, some plants are unable to take up the nutrients. This is particularly bad for the health of fruits and vegetable plants.
  • Don’t mess with the pH if the pH level is in the range of 6.0 to 7.0.
  • Azaleas, rhododendrons, blueberries and there are several other acid-loving plants. Avoid applying ash around these plants.

Using wood ash

You can use both lime and wood ash to increase soil pH. Both work in different ways. Limestone can take more than six months to change soil pH. On the other hand, being water-soluble, ash starts changing the pH level of soil rapidly. Soil with pH ranging from 6.0 to 7.0 can take 10 kilos of ash per 100 square metres Annually. Adding more than 10 kilos can also cause short-term salt injury. So, add ash to your lawn soil carefully.

Don’t forget to use gloves, a dust mask, and eye protection while adding ash to your lawn soil. It’s best to garden with ash on a windless and dry day. Mix soil and ash before planting and avoid letting ash settle on your growing plants.

Repelling slugs

You can sprinkle wood ashes around plants that are susceptible to slugs. This will repel slugs by irritating their moist bodies.
