When considering cork flooring for your home, it’s important to know the several types of cork products available, each with its own unique benefits and applications.

Cork tiles

Cork floor tiles are individual pieces of cork that are glued directly to the subfloor. They come in various shapes, sizes, and thicknesses, allowing for creative patterns and designs. These tiles often have a protective layer for added durability, making them a long-lasting option. Cork flooring tiles are ideal for smaller spaces or rooms with irregular shapes, as they can be easily cut and customised to fit any area.

Cork planks

Cork planks consist of long planks that use a click-lock system, similar to laminate flooring. This allows the floating planks to be installed without adhesive, making them a great option for DIY projects.

Cork flooring planks offer a seamless look and typically have a top layer of cork over a high-density fiberboard core, providing extra stability and ease of installation. They can be installed over existing flooring, which can save time and effort during renovation projects.

Cork sheets

Cork sheet flooring comes in large rolls and is installed as one continuous piece, like vinyl or linoleum. These sheets provide a smooth, uninterrupted surface, making them ideal for large areas.

Cork sheets are typically used in commercial spaces since they can cover expansive areas seamlessly. This type of flooring is glued down and usually requires professional installation to ensure a perfect finish.

FAQs on cork flooring

What is the downside to cork flooring?

Heavy furniture can leave permanent dents and sharp objects may gouge the surface, but using furniture pads can help mitigate this problem. Cork flooring may also fade with prolonged exposure to direct sunlight, leading to uneven tones from area rugs and furniture. It also requires periodic resealing every 5 to 10 years to protect against water damage and maintain its appearance.

Can you use cork flooring in bathrooms?

Yes, but with some considerations. Cork is naturally resistant to mould and mildew, which is beneficial in a moist environment. However, it is sensitive to excessive moisture, so it’s important to ensure that the bathroom is well-ventilated and that spills are cleaned up promptly. Look for cork products specifically designed for high-moisture areas or consider options with a water-resistant finish.

How to remove cork flooring?

To remove cork flooring:

  • Start by clearing the room of furniture and any obstructions.
  • Using a heat gun or hair dryer, soften the adhesive beneath the cork tiles or planks, making them easier to lift.
  • Gently pry up the tiles or planks with a putty knife or scraper, beginning from an edge or corner.
  • After removing the cork, scrape off any remaining adhesive from the subfloor, using a solvent or adhesive remover if necessary.
  • Finally, vacuum and clean the subfloor to prepare it for new flooring.

What colours does cork flooring come in?

Cork flooring colours include natural tones like light brown and beige, muted shades such as grey and taupe, and richer hues like chocolate brown and black. Some manufacturers even offer custom colours.

How to paint a wall

How to prep walls for painting

Fill in surface cracks

Before you look for easy painting ideas, make sure that you know how to prep the walls. You should start with a quick inspection for cracks in the wall. Filling in those cracks with putty and letting it dry overnight ensures that your paint goes on smoothly and that you don’t need multiple coats.

Sand down

If you filled in surface cracks, you need to sand down those cracks before painting. Fine grit sandpaper removes any excess putty and won’t leave behind scratches and gouge marks. You generally want to let the putty dry overnight before sanding it.

Clean walls

As you look for painting tips, you will find that many people recommend cleaning your walls before painting those surfaces. All you need is a little dish soap that you mix with water and apply it to the walls. Cleaning the wall removes any substances that can keep the paint from sticking.

Apply tape a lay a drop sheet

When preparing walls for painting, both painter’s tape and masking tape works well. It goes on smoothly and comes off cleanly without leaving residue behind. Use the tape to block off your outlet and baseboards as well as any other surfaces that you do not want to paint. It’s also a good idea to lay a drop cloth will protect the floors from the paint.

Laying a drop sheet is an important part of preparation / Source: MMPC

Purchase enough paint

Always determine how much paint you need before starting the job, especially if you choose a custom blend. Though home improvement stores follow paint mixture recipes, they cannot guarantee that a new batch will perfectly match your old batch of paint. One litre of paint will cover up to 6.5 square metres. Measure the size of the room and divide it by 6.5 to roughly see how many litres of paint you need.

Required tools

  • Paint/masking tape
  • Drop cloths
  • Primer: Tinted primers match the colour of the paint that you choose and reduce the amount of paint needed. When painting interior walls, you should always use at least one coat of primer first.
  • Brushes: Brushes are helpful for painting areas that you cannot reach with a roller and blending the borders and corners of a room with the rest of the wall.
  • Rollers: To paint a large room in less time, invest in one or more rollers. Rollers are also reusable. Once you finish painting, rinse off the rollers with some clean water and let them sit outside for a few hours to dry. You can use them when you need to repaint or touch up a room later.
  • Tray
  • Ladder: A ladder helps you reach the top of the room and apply both the paint and primer. It also helps you stay safe until the job is done.
  • Clean cloth: Having a few clean and dry cloths nearby can help you take care of accidents as they happen. If you knock over a can of interior wall paint, you can quickly mop it up before it creates a permanent stain. A dry cloth will also help you remove paint that drips onto other surfaces.

Tips for painting a wall

How to cut in painting

Cutting in painting is a technique that helps the areas around the corners and baseboards blend with the rest of the wall. Whether you use a brush or roller, go over those surfaces with a brush. Use the brush to apply smooth, streaks of paint around the border or corner and pull the brush towards the centre of the room. You can then go over those areas with a roller to smooth out any rough spots.

Contact local painters

How to paint a wall with a roller

Learning how to paint with a roller can save you some time because the roller covers a larger area with paint in less time than it would take with a brush. Pour enough paint in your trap to completely coat the bottom and fill it halfway up the sides. Run the roller through the paint and along the base of the tray. When you pull it towards you, the tray removes any excess paint from the roller. You should then paint a large uppercase “W” in the centre of the wall. As you use more paint, expand the size of the W and move the roller in different directions. This helps you fill in gaps and provides a smooth coat of paint.

How long does it take paint to dry?

The amount of time it takes for the paint to dry depends on the type of paint that you used. It typically takes six to eight hours for most interior house paints to dry. If you use a primer, you need to wait at least an hour for it to dry before applying the paint. You should not remove the tape or move back into the room until you give the paint a full 24 hours to dry. High humidity levels and cold temperatures are two factors that can increase the drying time.

How many coats of paint do you need for a wall?

Most walls need a minimum of two coats. Even if you use a primer, you need two coats of paint. Apply the first and let it dry completely before applying the next coat. If you find that traces of the old paint are still showing, you’ll need to apply a third coat. You may need multiple coats to hide brush marks and other mistakes, too.

Darker paint colours make a great feature wall / Explore Painting

How long does it take to paint a room?

It’s difficult to say how long it takes to paint a room because it depends on the size of the space and how quickly you work. Plan on spending at least four hours to paint a smaller room and up to six hours to paint a larger room. If you use any unique or custom painting techniques, the process will take even longer.

Tips for painting a feature wall

A feature wall is usually a different colour to the other walls and serves as a focal point in a home. When painting a feature wall, choose colours that work together and use a roller to provide an even coat of paint. You may want to use stencils to add a unique design to the wall, too.

How to hire a painter

Licensing and qualifications

Whether you want to know how to repaint a wall or where to start on your project, consider hiring a pro. Painters in Australia need a Certificate III in Painting and Decorating. They can get this through a registered organisation or a specialty institution. Some also receive their training through an apprenticeship program.

How to install underfloor insulation

What is underfloor insulation?

Underfloor insulation is an extra layer added underneath floorboards to prevent hot or cold air from escaping the home. Insulation can come in various different materials, such as polystyrene board, batt insulation and reflective foil.

Benefits of underfloor insulation

Floor insulation has many benefits. The main reasons why homeowners choose to install insulation in floors include:

Soundproofing

Your flooring can allow sounds and reverberations to filter through. With an insulating barrier between floorboards and the outside, the acoustics of vibration and sound waves is limited, resulting in a quieter environment.

Energy-efficient

By insulating your floors and ceilings, energy savings of up to 45% is possible. Whether you have hardwood floors with joists or a concrete slab, your floors are responsible for a considerable amount of heat loss.

Saves you money in the long run

Underfloor insulation will keep your home warmer in the winter and cool in the summer. The need to use heating and air conditioning will be significantly reduced, which will save you money when it comes to your energy bills. Even though underfloor insulation costs money to install, it should pay off in the long run when you spend less on heating and cooling.

Easy to install

There is not a lot of complicated installation requirements that comes with under house insulation. Fitting insulation between floor joints can be a simple procedure. Different types of insulation include:

  • Fibreglass/wool batts
  • Rock wool batts
  • Polyurethane foam
  • Polystyrene panels
The insulation must be fit securely in-between the joists / Source: Shutterstock

When can a home’s floors be insulated?

A home’s floors can be insulated any time, provided there is enough crawl space to access under the home. However, it is much easier to have this work done during a home’s initial construction.

Retrofitting

Retrofitting is the process of installing insulation to an already existing home. If your home has joist and stump floors, insulation is made to fit within the wooden slats. However, if your home sits on a slab, an experienced contractor in insulation installation is recommended. An expert will be required to assess whether there is enough space to go in and install the insulation.

During initial construction

Fitting underfloor insulation is easiest when the home is being constructed. Rigid foam insulation can be glued or fitted between wood sleepers and can also be done on top of finished concrete. Some homeowners incorporate radiant heating coils. A general contractor often has the means to place the installation while installing the floors.

How to install underfloor insulation

Install the strapping

Strapping consists of wire fasteners that are secured on floor joists. If using on concrete, plastic strapping is recommended. Wiring wrapped around a nail on both rafters is often used in securing.

Open insulation packets and let it expand

Before fitting insulation pieces between joists, allow them to air out and expand. This will prevent your strapping from being too snug.

Put the insulation in place

Insulation is designed to fit securely between joists to cover any holes or cracks on the surface. Make sure the entire length of the insulation is firmly in place.

What homes would benefit from underfloor insulation?

Homes in colder climates that are prone to heat loss will dramatically benefit from underfloor insulation. Additionally, homes that have a large number of tiled areas will also benefit. Placing insulation under bathroom floor areas can cut your heat loss by up to 40%. Homeowners often take steps to add insulation to ceilings, walls and roof joists, but neglect to realize the heat loss from a floor.

If you are in the process of building your own home in Canberra or elsewhere, underfloor insulation is an important thing to consider. It will be much easier to install before your home is completed. If you are looking to buy a brand new home, make sure this detail has been addressed. You can also use this feature as a bargaining tool in your offer to buy a house.

Protective equipment must be worn when handling insulation / Source: Shutterstock

How to hire an insulation expert

Regardless of an existing house or one that is under construction, hiring an insulation expert is always a good idea. You want your home to be as comfortable as possible. Insulation experts have the education and experience to complete the job correctly. While it is not always required to use an insulation expert, knowing that the work has been done accurately and is guaranteed will give you peace of mind.

Licensing per location

Each state has a required license for building classification. Ensure the professional you hire has the correct licensing to complete the job before you agree to work with them. Other factors to check are:

  • Number of years of experience
  • References and reviews
  • Break down of costs

Not every contractor will have experience in insulation installation. Make sure that your candidate has the background knowledge to do a proper job. An energy assessment can also explain how and why installing insulation under your floor can save money and make you more comfortable. A qualified insulation expert will also be familiar with the building codes in your area and can help to keep you up to code.

The carpet cleaning secrets the professionals don’t want you to know

Despite the preponderance of other attractive flooring solutions that make our living spaces look and feel good, we are still in love with the good old rug. Carpets bring warmth and softness to our living spaces, and depending on the choice; they can even add a touch of luxury.

However, it is not all smooth-sailing when it comes to carpet installations. The downside with carpets is that they will trap dirt and dust pretty fast. Carpets can also be precursors for foul odour in your interior spaces. Suppose you fail to take timely carpet maintenance. In that case, they can form breeding grounds for bacteria, mould and various other microscopic allergens that can transform an otherwise well-maintained home into an unhealthy environment for the occupants.

Regular carpet cleaning helps you prevent all of this while keeping your carpet in tip-top shape. Central to this is proper carpet cleaning. Buying cleaning products or hiring a professional cleaner might be easy. Still, the hard part is doing the cleaning right and using a carpet cleaning method that will work for you and help keep your carpet clean, fresh and in the best shape over its lifetime. Carpet Cleaner Cairns explains the top carpet cleaning secrets that the professionals don’t want you to know.

Frequent vacuuming is your carpet’s best friend

Vacuuming is probably the most underrated carpet cleaning and maintenance technique. Doing it frequently keeps your carpet clean for a longer duration of time which saves you the cost of having to call on a professional carpet cleaner regularly. Some dirt serves as ‘magnets’ for more dirt so the less on your carpets, the better for your overall carpet cleaning regimen. A good culprit is an oily dirt which will attract more dirt on your carpets and spread rather quickly.

Vacuuming should not just be focused on the carpet. It is also advisable to vacuum areas adjacent to the mat, including the entrances and high-traffic areas. Your feet will pick the dirt from these areas and transfer it to the soft fabrics of the carpet that readily hold onto the dirt. Ensure you clean the edges of the room as well as beneath your furniture as these areas can hide lots of dirt and dust that eventually find their way onto your carpets.

It is also advisable to master the right vacuuming technique that will maximize every cleaning action. Vacuuming your rooms and carpets is a cumbersome chore, so you better do it right whenever you master the energy and will to do it. You will have tremendous success when you vacuum with slow passes than doing it fast. Slow passes are especially crucial in the high-traffic areas that accumulate lots of dust and dirt.

You can manage most of the small stains yourself

Your professional carpet cleaner won’t tell you this, but you can handle most of the small or spot carpet stains yourself. You have to ensure that you do it promptly and with the right cleaning materials and techniques. Some of the ‘must-have’ cleaning materials that are essential to the optimal cleaning and maintenance of your carpets include the following:

  • Club soda: Best for handling wine and beer spillages
  • White vinegar: You can mix vinegar with water for juice and soda stains
  • Dishwashing liquid: Ordinary dishwashing liquid can work on several stains when mixed with warm water to form a friendly cleaning solution.
  • Wet wipes: Wet wipes are hyper-efficient in quickly blotting out spot stains on the carpets.

Always blot and never rub your stains

Rubbing and scrubbing stains immediately is a sure-fire way of ensuring that it not only spreads over a large surface area but also embeds itself more in-depth into the carpet fibres. Rubbing adds permanence to the stain. The best spot stain treatment merely is blotting it out.

When a stain spills on your carpet, start by blotting out gradually using an absorbent paper towel, sponge or napkin. Do this many times, gently applying pressure in each blotting action. It takes as much stain as possible out of the carpet rather than pushing it deep into the carpet fibres. When blotting out the stain, start from its outer edges and gradually make your way to the centre.

Treat all stains immediately

Your professional carpet cleaner probably won’t tell you this. Still, you have a perfect shot at eliminating carpet stains when you treat them immediately. Granted, you can’t always be there when the spillage or staining happens. Still, when it happens on your watch, it is recommended to treat the stain immediately. This allows you to get the stain out before it percolates deep into the carpet’s fibres. Unless you are familiar with professional carpet cleaning techniques and materials, avoid using powerful detergents or chemicals. If the stain is stubborn, you can promptly contact a professional carpet cleaning service. You can try using vinegar, club soda wet wipes, hydrogen peroxide or the simple dishwashing liquid depending on the type of stain to clean out the stain immediately.

Contact local carpet cleaning experts

Hydrogen peroxide can remove your blood stains

Bloodstains on carpets aren’t as common as wine, beer, juice, dirt or food stains. If you cut yourself and blood spread or spatters on your carpets, you can remove these unsightly stains with hydrogen peroxide. If the bloodstain is still fresh, you can try removing it by blotting it out with an absorbent paper towel or napkins. If the blood has dried out, try loosening it using water and a mild detergent. Using a butter knife, you can gently scrape off the dried blood stains off the carpet fibres. After scraping them off, you can use hydrogen peroxide to clear off the rest of the blood residues. Hydrogen peroxide will fizz and then foam when it comes into contact with the bloodstains, eliminating the stain in the process.

Use area rugs in high traffic areas

The high traffic areas on your carpets will suffer a higher degree of wear and dirt than the low traffic areas. Because they take in a lot of dirt, they are also generally harder to clean. They will accumulate a lot of dirt from the high foot traffic that will necessitate a higher cleaning frequency. One way of preserving your carpet is by using area rugs in the place where your carpet is particularly taking a good beating. These can include the following:

  • The spot where your kitchen meets your living room
  • The hallways
  • The spot where your bathroom meets the joint area or the hallway
  • Backyard doors

The best way to relieve pressure off the high-traffic areas is by using area rugs. Beyond the functional aspect of protecting your carpets, these rugs can also be a decorative item. You can choose different styles, shapes and patterns to add some style and charm to your house interiors. These are some of the best carpet cleaning secrets that your professional carpet cleaner won’t tell you about. However, it would be best if you mainly used these for small localized stains. An experienced and well-trained carpet cleaner better use powerful carpet cleaning detergents, chemicals and equipment.

How to paint tiles

Tiles play a pivotal role in defining the aesthetic of a space, but trends change, and sometimes, so should your tiles. If you’re wondering how to paint bathroom tiles or refresh your kitchen, having your tiles painted is an easy, affordable solution instead of a tile replacement. Here are some tips on how to paint tiles, ensuring a smooth DIY experience.

What is tile paint?

Tile paint is a type of paint designed specifically for painting tiled surfaces, including walls and floors. When you use ordinary house paint, it will not stick to the tiles. Even if the paint sticks, it will begin peeling away. Choosing the right type of paint is the first step in this DIY job.

What to know before painting tiles

Before diving into the paint cans, here are three important things you should keep in mind for a flawless tile-painting experience.

  • Choose the right tiles. Not all tiles are created equal, and you need to select the right type for their use and functionality. For instance, it’s ideal to get non-slip tiles for the bathroom. Meanwhile, ceramic or porcelain tiles provide a solid surface for the paint to adhere to.
  • Surface preparation is key. Give your tiles some TLC before diving into painting. Clean and sand the existing tiles to remove the glaze and ensure proper paint adhesion.
  • Select the right paint. Investing in good quality tile primer and paint for tiles from a reputable store is essential for a finish that stands the test of time.

Benefits of painting your tiles

Renew the look

Painting over tiles is an easy way to renew the look of any room. Many people choose trendy colours when they install tiles and later find that the tiles look dated and out of place. Choose from a myriad of colours to give your space a fresh, contemporary feel.

Cheaper than replacing them

Replacing your tiles and hiring a pro to do it costs a lot. You need to pay someone to remove the old tiles and check for water damage, and you also need to pay for new tiles and grout/other materials. Painting tiles is a wallet-friendly alternative to a complete tile replacement. You can also conceal dated or imperfect tiles, turning flaws into features.

Easy DIY

Knowing how to paint tiles can turn a weekend into a home improvement project with minimal time and readily available supplies. Depending on the size of the space, you might need as little free time as a few hours. Most jobs take a weekend or less and require supplies that you can get from any home improvement store.

Create custom and personal designs

Unleash your creativity by crafting personalised designs, making your space uniquely yours. While you can draw inspiration from what other DIY enthusiasts did, you don’t need to rely solely on their ideas. You can combine new colours and come up with your own designs.

What you’ll need

Gather the essential tools and equipment to ensure a seamless and successful project. Having these tools and materials on hand should prepare you well for your tile painting project with confidence.

  • Tile cleaner: To thoroughly clean and prep the tiles before painting.
  • Sandpaper and sanding block: Use fine-grit sandpaper to remove the tile glaze and use the sanding block to smoothen the surface.
  • Masking tape or painter’s tape: Essential for protecting surfaces you don’t want to paint, such as appliances and outlets.
  • Paintbrushes and rollers: A combination of brushes and rollers helps cover different areas efficiently.
  • Paint trays: To hold and distribute the paint while using a roller.
  • Drop cloths or plastic sheets: Protect your flooring and surrounding areas from paint splatter.
  • Paint stirrer: Ensure your paint is thoroughly mixed before application.
  • Tack cloth: Use to wipe away dust and debris after sanding.
  • Tile primer: Choose a high-quality primer for better adhesion.
  • Tile paint: Make sure it’s a durable paint suitable for tiles.
  • Sealer: For added protection, especially in high-traffic areas or if painting floor tiles.

Safety gear:

  • Protective gloves: Shield your hands from chemicals in cleaners and paints.
  • Safety glasses: Keep your eyes protected from dust and debris.
  • Respirator mask: If working in a confined space, ensure proper ventilation and protect yourself from fumes.

A step-by-step guide on painting tiles

Step 1: Repair any damaged tiles

Showing a cracked tile | Source: iStock

Begin the prep work by treating any chips or cracks with TLC to ensure a smooth surface. Caulk can repair any thin cracks or minor chips by applying a small amount while wearing gloves and levelling it with your finger.

For major flaws, use an exterior-grade waterproof spackle. Apply a little amount and wipe away the excess with a putty knife, bringing the filler down to the tile surface.

Step 2: Clean and sand the tiles

Fill a bucket with warm water and TSP cleanser (Trisodium phosphate). Wipe the tile down with gloves to remove dirt. Begin at the top and work your way down, changing the water as needed. Let it dry after rinsing with clean water.

Use sandpaper to scuff up the glazing without sanding down to the tile body while wearing safety gear. To prevent beeswax from embedding, clean the tile with water and dry it with a tack cloth.

Step 3: Protect non-paintable areas

Shield your furniture, appliances and other items from accidental paint splatters by using masking tape and sheet plastic. Protect outlets and appliances to ensure that your paint lands only where it is supposed to.

Step 4: Prime the surface

Grab your tile primer and fill a lined tray with bonding primer. Apply thin applications with a roller, and be careful not to press too firmly. Using a roller ensures that you don’t miss any parts of the tile and that the primer goes on smoothly. The primer can take a few hours or longer to dry or cure.

Step 5: Paint the tiles

Painting bathroom tiles to renew the look | Source: iStock

Choose high-quality tile paint and apply it evenly with a roller. You can also spray paint your tiles if it’s easier and you have the right equipment on hand.

Avoid overloading your roller or paintbrush to prevent drips. Fill in the gaps and smooth down the edges with a paintbrush.

If you want to create unique patterns, use a cut sponge, prefabricated stencil, or handmade painter’s tape stencil. Before attempting patterns, check the manufacturer’s instructions regarding drying times.

Enhance the overall aesthetic by delicately painting the grout lines. Use a fine brush or a specially designed grout paint to accentuate these details, creating a cohesive and professionally finished appearance.

Contact local painters

Step 6: Let the paint dry and cure

It is best to let the tile paint dry completely overnight, although it may only take a few hours. If humidity slows the drying process, operating fans and leaving windows open will draw moisture from the air and help the paint dry faster.

Step 7: Apply a second coat

When buying tile paint, make sure you have enough for multiple coats, as the exact quantity needed depends on the job. Darker tiles generally require more tile paint than lighter ones. Additionally, surfaces with accent tiles, patterns, or unique designs may need extra coverage. Using a primer to conceal old tiles reduces the overall tile paint required. If old tiles are visible through the paint, you may need multiple coats.

Step 8: Apply a sealer

Finally, apply two coats of polyurethane sealer after the paint has fully set. Allow the paint to cure for 24 to 48 hours before applying the sealer to ensure it is no longer tacky to the touch, promoting excellent bonding.

Preserve the beauty of your painted tiles with regular maintenance. Clean them gently with a mild detergent, and avoid abrasive cleaners to extend the life and vibrancy of your newly painted tiles. With proper care, your painted tiles will continue to enhance your space’s aesthetics for years.

Transform your space with fresh coats of paint

Tile painting emerges as a versatile and cost-effective home remodelling option. The possibilities are endless, and knowing how to paint tiles allows you to personalise your surroundings.

If you decide to let a pro handle the job, choose someone with the right qualifications. Painters in Australia need a Certificate III in Painting and Decorating, which goes to those who did apprentice programs and took the right classes.

Hiring a skilled painter can ensure that your house painting endeavour goes off without a hitch. They can assist you in selecting the right kind of paint and colour to complement your style and emphasize your tiles. With a single brush stroke, you may transform, refresh, and customise the style of your kitchen or bathroom!

Don’t neglect the idea of safety when painting, especially if your painting job involves heights, ceilings and hard to reach areas. Professional painters have the right type of ladders and harness equipment to paint difficult to reach walls in the home. Painting also involves using chemicals such as solvents to clean up any spillages or paint runs, which can be very dangerous if they make contact with skin or are inhaled.

4. Perfect finish

You may think that the do-it-yourself approach to painting is worth the cost savings of hiring a professional. However commercial painters and home painters are trained perfectionists who will ensure that the job is completed to the highest of standards. It’s certainly worth spending the extra money to achieve a quality finish for your home or business. Professional decorators also know which are the best paint brands and finishes for each type of job, whether you want a matt, gloss, satin or eggshell finish your painter will be able to source the best quality product to achieve the desired look.

Q&A with a professional painter

We spoke to professional painter Hass from DHY Painting And Decorating, based in Mill Park Victoria, to find out more about Australian home painting trends, the most requested painting jobs, popular paint colours and what the best thing is about being a professional painter.

How long have you been painting and decorating for?

Painting is a family trade, my father is a painter, and my great uncle was a painter. I was exposed to painting from a very young age. Every school holiday during high school, I was out with my father and uncle acting as their apprentice.

What are your most requested painting jobs?

My most requested work would be repainting for landlords refreshing their property to release. But we don’t stop there, DHY Painting complete paint jobs for many new homes, repainting for family homes, office repaints, and many other special projects.

What is the most popular colour Australian home owners are painting their walls?

It would definitely be “White on White”.

What sort of paint is best to use for painting exterior walls and fences?

My go-to paint for exterior walls and fences would have to be Taubmans Endure Exterior, or Taubmans All Weather.

What are the different types of carpet?

Choosing between carpets can be tricky and with the range of colours and textures on the market, it can get overwhelming. The texture and colour you choose for your carpet will primarily depend on the way your space is used. In areas of high activity, durable fabrics will work best but in rooms that cater to children, a darker carpet will be preferable. Discover how to choose a carpet for your space based on the different styles and fibres available.

Different types of carpet available

Cut or loop

Carpets are either a cut pile or loop pile construction and both styles offer something different. The differences lie in the style, level and length of the yarn, but the material you choose will depend on the durability and ease of the maintenance you prefer.

In a loop carpet, the yarn is looped and doesn’t show external marks created by walking or vacuuming, making it ideal for areas with high foot traffic. On the other hand, the exposed yarn is cut and looped in a cut and loop yarn carpet. These carpets are more suitable for bedrooms, where foot traffic is quite low.

  • Twist carpets: also known as ‘frieze’ carpets, are comprised of yarn twisted in different directions that create the appearance of depth and texture. As a cut pile style, twist carpets provide a comfortable and soft surface but are also long lasting and durable, making it the ideal option for households with pets. The textured look is currently trending and can complement modern home designs.

twist carpets

  • Plush carpets: are level-cut piles that are luxurious options for the home, ensuring comfort and style. With consistent fibre lengths and a high-sheen surface, cut pile plush carpets are more prone to display temporary shades from vacuums and footprints. Textured plush carpets, however, have fibres twisted in different angles and effectively conceal vacuum or footprints making it an ideal option for high activity areas and people with busy lifestyles.

  • Loop carpets: Loops of yarn can create a range of modern carpet finishes. Loop carpets referred to as Berber, are created with yarns that are looped back into the carpet and are generally made from nylon or olefin fibres. Level or multi-level loops are constructed with rows of looped yarns of the same or variant heights, depending on your preference and style.

loop carpets

Wool or nylon

In Australian homes, the most popular carpet selections are made of blends from nylon, wool or olefin (polypropylene). Choosing a carpet won’t depend on the fibre selection alone, but determining which fibres are best suited to your environment will help you make the right carpet choice.

Wool carpets can be a great addition to a space, feeling soft and luxurious. Wool is a natural and sustainable fibre, which is bound to keep you warm in winter and cool in the summer. As a resilient and easily dyed fibre, wool is also available in a range of styles to adapt to the look of your home. Textured or twist carpets can often trap dirt between fibres and will quickly absorb any liquid stains so the required maintenance should be considered prior to investing in a wool rug or carpet. The elasticity and resilience of wool also makes it a suitable option for high traffic spaces, while its durability and soft surface makes it a great choice for cooler climates.

Ingrid Powell from Choices Flooring, estimates that around 90% of all residential carpets are made from nylon, a durable and stain resistant fibre.

“Wool is the ultimate natural fibre when it comes to carpet whereas nylons and polypropylenes are manmade and have more manufactured properties included in their makeup,” she said.

Nylon fibres are either woven or made from sunken loops, creating a simple and compact texture. Nylon is cost effective for its durability and versatile range of colours and styles, and is highly resistant to abrasion. It is a synthetic fibre however so it is prone to emit off-gas.

Nylon is a durable and versatile synthetic option / Source: Supplied

Olefin fibres have a low absorbency rate. As a positive, this means olefin carpets are stain resistant but on the flip side, olefin is not easily dyed, providing limited style choices. Olefin carpets can be most useful for outdoor areas or spaces prone to spillage or liquid damage. Olefin is non-resilient and it will not regain its shape easily when exposed to weight or high activity areas.

Colour options

Take a moment to consider the space you intend to carpet as this will influence the style and fabric you choose. With pets or children about, carpets with lower maintenance are preferable and a dark charcoal or coffee coloured carpet will show less of the stains, but in small spaces, dark carpet colours can make the space appear smaller. When paired with white walls, lighter coloured carpets will draw your eyes outwards, giving the appearance of extra space, but can be a lot more difficult to clean or maintain.

Start by considering what mood or effect you wish to create with your carpet. For example, if you wish to add a homely touch to an empty space, you may consider opting for a neutral or warm tones carpet such as greys or soft pinks, to add an inviting allure to a space. A neutral colour carpet will also shift the focus away from the flooring and complement your furnishings. Alternatively, if you wish to open up a small and stuffy space, you might choose a carpet with whites or cool tones such as blues and greens, to make a room feel cooler and brighter.

Epoxy coating a garage floor

Ever stepped on a rusty nail in your garage? Or perhaps you’ve got oil stains that just won’t budge? Say goodbye to these problems because epoxy coating is the ultimate solution for a tough, durable, and good-looking garage floor. This post will walk you through the entire process of epoxy coating your garage floor, from prep to finish, along with some handy tips to ensure a great result.

What is epoxy coating?

Garage floor epoxy coatings work well for many garage floors, and for good reason. They’re basically a two-part system—a resin and a catalyst, usually a polyamine hardener—that mix together to form a tough, durable finish. The epoxy resin bonds with the concrete, creating a seamless, stain-resistant surface that’s easy to clean and looks great.

Plus, you can choose from various colours and finishes to match your garage’s style.

How do epoxy coatings work?

An epoxy floor covering forms a robust chemical bond with the surface they’re applied to, creating a durable, protective seal. When you mix epoxy resin and hardener, the chemical reaction causes them to harden and cure. This process allows the epoxy to penetrate the pores of concrete, masonry, or other substrates, locking it in place for long-lasting protection.

The result is a garage coating impervious to different elements, including heat, corrosive chemicals, UV rays, abrasions, scuff marks, and general wear and tear. This makes it an excellent choice for transforming tired concrete into a polished, functional and long-lasting surface in garages.

Epoxy coatings also adhere remarkably well to a variety of materials beyond concrete, including fibre, glass, and metal. Their versatility and durability make epoxy an easy choice for homeowners looking to refresh and protect their garage floors.

6 Benefits of epoxy coatings for garage floors

Epoxy coatings for garage floors offer a number of advantages.

1. Enhanced appearance

An epoxy coating is a significant improvement to the appearance of a garage floor, transforming a plain concrete surface into a sleek and glossy one. The smooth, uniform application creates a polished look that enhances the space’s overall aesthetic.

But that’s not all—you can choose from a variety of colours and finishes, including solid colours, metallic finishes, and even decorative flakes to match your garage’s style.

2. Cost-effective solution

Compared to other flooring options, epoxy-coated garage floors offer great value for money. One application ensures complete coverage and long-lasting durability, eliminating concerns over frequent, costly repairs or replacements. Typically, the cost to epoxy coat a garage floor varies between $5 to $15 per square meter, depending on the epoxy type and project complexity.

3. Exceptional durability

Busy garage? No problem. The tough, abrasion-resistant finish of an epoxy coating can handle heavy foot traffic and the weight of the vehicles, as well as any dropped tools. Epoxy coatings also resist chemicals, oil, and grease, making them ideal for places where you park or perform repairs on those vehicles—exactly what a garage is.

4. Impressive longevity

Epoxy garage floor coatings can last decades. Many homeowners report that epoxy floors still maintain their vibrant colour and pristine condition even after 20 or 30 years. That said, its lifespan varies depending on factors like the epoxy’s quality, the concrete surface’s preparation, and the amount of wear and tear the floor receives.

5. Superior protection

The seamless, impermeable layer of epoxy coating shields concrete floors from various hazards, including chemical spills, oil stains, moisture damage, and heavy impact. Epoxy coatings also create a barrier that hinders moisture from penetrating the concrete, preventing mould and mildew growth.

6. Remarkable resistance

Epoxy coatings are engineered to resist the elements. They can withstand dramatic temperature fluctuations, exposure to corrosive chemicals, and vehicles’ constant weight and movement without compromising their integrity. They also resist UV rays, preventing fading and discolouration over time.

Preparing the garage floor for epoxy coating

It’s a good idea to prepare your garage floor before you apply epoxy coating properly. Here’s a list of materials you’ll need to get started:

  • Concrete cleaner
  • A stiff-bristled broom
  • A pressure washer (optional)
  • A shop vacuum
  • A scraper
  • A patching compound
  • A concrete etching solution
  • A paint roller and tray
  • A paintbrush
  • Masking tape
  • Safety glasses and gloves

Applying the epoxy coating

Preparation

If your garage floor isn’t properly prepped, the epoxy won’t adhere properly, and your beautiful new coating won’t last as long. Adequate preparation involves filling all holes, patching damaged areas, removing moisture, and ensuring the concrete is sealed and free of cracks.

Cleaning

The next step is to ensure the concrete is clean and free of dirt, grease, oil, and loose or flaking material.

Vacuum the floor to remove all dust, dirt and debris. Mix a degreasing solution with vinegar or citrus. spray it on oil stains and grease spots, and wipe them with a microfiber cloth. If you’ve got some stubborn stains, a pressure washer can come in handy.

Washing

Etching the concrete with a concrete etching solution helps create a rough surface, allowing the epoxy to bond properly.

Spread an acid solution on the floor evenly and use a stiff-bristled broom to work it into the floor. Leave it for about 10 minutes, then power wash the floor. Once you acid wash and hose down the floor and it’s dry, vacuum it to remove all residue.

Taping

Put painter’s tape or duct tape along the base of the garage door as a boundary within which the epoxy will be applied. Once you tape up the walls and edges, you are ready to paint on the epoxy coating.

Mixing

Improper mixing can lead to an uneven, weak, or brittle finish, so following the manufacturer’s instructions and taking the necessary precautions is essential.

  1. Prepare the mixing area: Choose a clean, well-ventilated area and wear safety glasses and gloves.
  2. Open the containers: Carefully open the epoxy resin and hardener containers, ensuring you have the correct quantities as stated in the product’s instructions.
  3. Pre-mix the resin: Stir the epoxy resin for about a minute using a clean mixing stick or a drill with a stirring bit attached.
  4. Add the hardener: Pour the hardener into the resin container, adding the entire amount.
  5. Thorough blending: Blend the resin and hardener for at least 3 minutes using a drill with a stirring bit attached. Scrape the sides and bottom of the container to ensure all the material is blended. Observe the manufacturer’s recommended proportions for the resin and hardener to ensure complete blending. Using incorrect proportions or not mixing thoroughly can result in a weak, brittle, or uneven coating.
  6. Rest time: Once thoroughly mixed, put the lid back on the container loosely and let it sit in the shade for about 30 minutes. The container might feel warm to the touch as the chemicals react.

Cutting

To create a neat border around your garage floor, use a 3-mm paintbrush to apply a 4-mm line of epoxy around the edges of all walls, extending into seams and corners. This “cutting in” step will prevent epoxy from spilling onto the walls and ensure a clean, finished look.

Application

Now it’s time to roll on the epoxy to your garage flooring!

  • Grab your paint roller–you can attach it to a longer pole for easier reach–and then dip the roller into the epoxy tray to start. Make sure only the bottom half of the roller is coated.
  • Start in the corner farthest from the exit, working towards the garage door to avoid stepping on wet epoxy. Apply the epoxy to an area of about 1 square metre using a large “W” pattern, ensuring even coverage and watching for air bubbles. Roll the roller back and forth over the epoxy, filling the entire area without leaving roller marks.
  • Continue applying the epoxy in corresponding sections until you reach the garage door. Allow each section to dry slightly before moving on to the next.

Remember to work quickly since epoxy cures just as fast. Avoid stepping on wet epoxy by using a piece of plywood or a walking board to move around the garage floor while the epoxy is wet. Keep your roller clean using a solvent or cleaner, as the epoxy manufacturer recommends.

Coating with epoxy flakes

If you’re using epoxy flakes to add a decorative touch to your garage floor, sprinkle them onto each section of wet epoxy. Grab a handful of flakes and sprinkle them liberally over the floor, ensuring even coverage. Some flakes come in containers with shaker tops for easier application.

You might want to practise your sprinkling or shaking technique outside the garage on a tarp before you start. This will help you get a feel for the right amount of flakes to use and avoid over-application. Once you’re comfortable with the technique, carefully sprinkle the flakes onto your wet epoxy and allow the floor to dry completely.

Curing and drying

Epoxy coatings typically take 24-72 hours to fully cure, depending on factors like temperature, humidity, and the type of epoxy used. Warmer temperatures and lower humidity generally speed up the curing process, while cooler temperatures and higher humidity can slow it down.

Avoid walking on the epoxy floor for at least 24 hours to prevent marring the surface and allow the coating to harden entirely. Always refer to the manufacturer’s instructions for specific curing times and recommendations.

DIY epoxy application or hiring a professional

If you plan to DIY your epoxy garage floor coating, first look at your garage floor and document its current condition. Take photos of any existing cracks, holes, or uneven areas, and even note down any other damage or issues you see. This record will help you track any changes to the floor after you apply the epoxy coating. It could also be helpful if you need to make repairs in the future or if you need to file an insurance claim.

When aiming for a flawless, long-lasting epoxy floor, calling in an experienced professional is often the wisest choice. Professional installers have specialised expertise, state-of-the-art equipment, and dedicated manpower to ensure a seamless application process and a superior-quality finish.

Make sure the person you choose to apply the epoxy coating to your garage floor has the proper license and qualifications.

Epoxy for durable garage floors

Epoxy coatings offer a durable, stylish, and versatile solution for garage floor coating, transforming a drab space into a functional and attractive area. Whether you’re a DIY enthusiast or prefer professional help, epoxy coatings can enhance your garage’s appearance and safeguard it from wear and tear longer.

Before embarking on a DIY project, consider consulting a garage flooring treatment expert in epoxy coatings to ensure you choose the right epoxy and application techniques for your specific needs.

The steps to take when renovating floors

There are a lot of big and small housing projects that can make a significant impact on how a home feels. One of those projects that are commonly tackled is getting new floors. When you start thinking about getting new floors for your house, there are a lot of decisions to make. Do you want tile or hardwood? Should you pick Berber or plush carpeting?

Once you’ve figured out what kind of floor you want there are more decisions to be made like, who is going to install the floor and how long will it take? If you need a guide for some of the steps to take when you’re planning to remodel your floors keep reading.

Don’t be overwhelmed by everything that needs to be done. Taking each step at a time is all you need to do to prepare yourself and your home for the new flooring that is going to take your house to a new level.

1. Get prepared

When you’re ready to jump into getting a new floor, the first thing you will need to do is have your floored measured. You can do this yourself for a rough estimate while you shop for the floor treatments you prefer, but it is important to have a professional come out to your home and measure before an order is placed. You don’t want to be stuck without enough carpet or tile!

Once all your supplies are in stock, go ahead and schedule an installation date. Before your installers come, have a plan to move furniture out of the way so they can quickly get your new floor put in. If you are having multiple rooms of flooring put in, you may have to move your furniture in stages.

It may seem like a lot of work to move all your furniture but rearranging it around your home is easier than renting a storage unit. You can check if your installers are able to move your furniture but be aware that may be an extra fee if you opt not to do it yourself.

You will also want to make sure you have a clear path ready for the installers to bring in all the materials. If you’ve blocked off your entryway with your couch and coffee table, they won’t be able to easily maneuver their way in with a huge roll of carpet. You may also need to take fragile items off your walls since the hammering may disrupt them or cause them to fall.

Another thing to plan before your installation process begins is, having a waste removal plan. It may be that your installers will take your old carpeting and carpet pad, but it is certainly good to have an expectation of what will happen. If you are responsible for hiring a skip bin, be sure to schedule it’s delivery early, so you don’t stall the installation timeline.

2. Seal off and protect

If you are having a hardwood floor installed, sealing off rooms that aren’t getting flooring is especially important. Any flooring project is going to kick up some dust and debris, but the process for hardwood flooring can be very messy, especially when sanding is necessary which it often is.

You will want to try to keep the dust in your home to a minimum if possible, and the best ways to do that are to seal rooms off completely. If you will need to access rooms during the flooring process, then the next best thing is to use zippered plastic seals, so that rooms can be closed off as much as possible.

It is important to remove doors that go between areas where new flooring will go. Keep track of all the hinge pieces in labelled bags so the doors will reinstall easily and you won’t find a hinge pin has gone missing. Storing the doors out of the way will help prevent them from being damaged.

Don’t forget to seal air vents as well, especially since the dust can damage your HVAC system. Dust also be transported around your home and cause respiratory issues. If you need to run the air conditioning or heat during your installation, use fibreglass sheets to help keep the dust at bay while still allowing airflow.

You may want to get an air purifier to help cut down on the dust in the air and help you breathe better while you get a new floor. Be sure to protect the floors that will not be remodelled, so they aren’t damaged by heavy equipment and your installer’s boots. Old carpeting, thick towels or plastic pads are great options to keep your other floors looking great.

3. Check your subfloor

You may not give much thought to your subfloor, the plywood surface that your new floor will rest on, but you should. If your subfloor is rotten or has cracks or dips, it should be replaced or fixed so that your floor looks it’s very best. The subfloor can also be the cause for those squeaks you hear, so this is a great time to update it if needed!

Since your subfloor is the foundation of your new floor, you want it to be at it’s best. Have your flooring experts include a new subfloor in your estimate so all the work can be done at once. Another option involves replacing them yourselves before the installation. You want your subfloor to be stable and even for the best installation possible.

If when your old flooring is removed there are excess nails or staples in the subfloor a professional installer will have a plan in place and know what to do to remove them so that your new floor will look great on even, and good quality subfloor.

4. Get the floor installed

Laying carpet is an entirely different process than installing a hardwood floor. The next step is to make sure the floor installation is correct. Hiring a professional to put your new floor in place is the best indicator that you’re on the right track to a great new floor. Still, even professionals can make mistakes, so be sure to look over their work before they leave.

Installing carpeting can go quickly; in many cases, it will be a one day process that is completed in a matter of hours. Hardwood floors can take up to a week to be completed depending on the size of the area you are putting the wooden floor in. Hardwood floors have specific aftercare instructions that should be followed.

Once your hardwood floors are in place, you can walk on them in about 6 hours with socks on. It is best to wait at least 24 hours before walking on new hardwood floors with shoes on and waiting a minimum of 48 hours before you move your furniture back into place. These rules may seem inconvenient but follow them if you want your investment to last without damage.

With proper care and maintenance, a good hardwood floor’s finish should last a minimum of 10 years. They can last potentially longer by giving the floor time before you begin walking through consistently.

5. Finishing touches

Baseboards:

If you were going to get new baseboards or paint to follow up on your new floor, now is the time to do it. It is always better to put baseboards on after the flooring so the baseboards won’t suffer any damage from flooring installation.

Mouldings and floor trims:

Mouldings and trims have the ability to give your flooring materials an ideal fit around the edges. They’re available in various kinds.

If you’re planning to cover a gap between your walls and skirting board, you can use quarter-round moulding. End-cap moulding or square-nose moulding is a decorative edging strip used around your metal door tracking and around your walls. It connects two flooring materials that are not of the same type. It’s also used as alternate option to quarter-round moulding.

If any trim or threshold pieces need to be placed, this is when that will happen as well. There may be some cleanup to do, but once you’ve waited the allotted time, you can move your furniture back into place and enjoy your new floor.

Coatings (sealants, oils and lacquers):

To prevent dirt and spills from ruining your wooden floor, you may want to apply a coat of lacquer or oil. With so many choices, choosing the right floor coating can be overwhelming unless you know a bit about its chemical makeup.

For example, solvent-borne, polyurethane-based coatings are great for resisting scratches and wear and tear, but these finishes will yellow with time. Oil-modified urethane coatings have a mineral base and will make your floor look beautiful, but they have to be reapplied every few years. Water-borne polyurethanes have an advantage because they’re non-toxic, and they never yellow. They’re also durable and fast-drying, which makes them a superb option for your floor. Epoxy-based coatings have strong chemical compounds that bond together to create an extremely hard, durable finish. If you live with children or elderly family members and you’re worried about safety, you can also opt for an anti-slip coating, which improves floor traction and makes falls less likely to occur. Acrylic and coloured sealant work best on laminate or timber flooring.

Conclusion

Getting a new floor can be easy when you follow these five steps. Work with your professional flooring experts to get the best possible experience and the floor you’ve always wanted. Whether you pick tile, carpet or another flooring option your experience may vary but these steps are necessary to work for anyone and any flooring project.

A guide to floating timber floors

What are floating timber floors?

Simply put, it’s a floor that is not attached in any way (e.g. by glue or nails) to the primary foundation. Floating timber floors have a “plug and go” quality in that they can be placed over the existing floor, concrete, tiles, plywood, particle floorboard, cork or tile in the home. Homeowners just have to ensure that the floor is even before placing the floating timber planks. Laying floating timber over existing flooring also provides an extra layer of noise insulation.

Source: F&F Constructions Pty Ltd

There are 2 types of floating timber floors, both of which have pros and cons:

  1. Artificial timber floors: Artificial floating timber flooring is basically a laminate veneer overlay. Laminates are constructed to look exactly like real hardwood and require lower maintenance and are generally cheaper. You aren’t able to sand or repolish them, but mots are designed to be scratch resistant.
  2. Solid timber floors: True floating timber flooring is a combination of hardwood pressed with a thicker fibreboard base. It comes finished, so adjusting for evenness is not a concern. If needed, it can be sanded down for a desired effect, but it is suggested not to do this too often due to the thinness of the natural wood on top. This option might be easier to clean and maintain – sanding and repolishing can help you remove minor damage and keep your floors looking new. However, the initial cost of the materials and installation is more expensive.

Regardless of the choice, both real and artificial floating timber flooring will arrive ready to install.

Benefits of floating floors

  • Easier to install. They can cover all types of flooring materials and easily create the look of timber.
  • It is available in a rich variety of colours suitable for all types of colour themes in offices as well as homes.
  • They are durable and often come with long warranties – usually 25 years or more.
  • There is no waiting period for using it after installation as there is no glue that needs to harden.

Can I install floating flooring myself?

One of the benefits of using floating flooring, is the huge cost savings compared to true professionally installed timber flooring. If you are a confident DIYer, you can always try out your construction skills and install them yourself! Timber flooring can add natural beauty to every room of your home, but is best used away from wet areas. You have your pick of wood types including cedar, oak and pine.

Most of the time, these floors are easy to install. Instructions are often provided. You may need to purchase glue, underlay materials and trims for this product. Within just a few hours of installing it, this type of flooring is ready to be used.

Floating timber floors also offer flexibility, meaning that they have natural “give” to the wood. Because of this, you’ll need to ensure ample space between the flooring and the floating timber flooring to withstand the expansion due to humidity variations.

Over time, this reduces sagging and unattractive gaps that can sometimes form in other wood flooring. These floors are actually designed to have small gaps that give the wood room to expand and contract.

How to maintain your floating timber floors

A properly installed or finished floor can look beautiful, but it is the maintenance of the floor which may help the floor to retain its beauty. If you want to avoid your floor appearing distressed or worn out prematurely, you must consider maintenance work. It will keep the floor in tip-top condition. You can also use floor mats and protective pads to improve the looks and add to the life of the floors. Here are some important maintenance tips you can follow.

1. Keep a check over dirt and dust

Floating timber floor may develop dents and scratches when exposed to dust and dirt. It is important to consider a protective finish for the floors. You should keep the floors clean every time. A daily cleaning and maintenance schedule should be followed – with regular mopping, sweeping and vacuuming. This will keep the dirt, dust and grit away from the floors which means it won’t develop scratches and marks.

Stick to your cleaning routine you establish. However, it is always advisable to clean the engineered floors with a soft cleaner and mop, as any high density and acidic cleaner will surely corrode the layer of the floor.

2. Protect your timber floors

A wooden floor is suitable for almost any lifestyle. Wood is a natural flooring option which is ideal for areas experiencing high traffic. It is durable and sturdy as well. A bit of maintenance will increase its life further. You may prefer placing rugs and protective pads on the surface of the floors to prevent scratches. If you are using it for hallway, living room or entryway, you must make sure to protect the floor. Proper rugs and carpets can save the floor from damage due to wear and tear and prolong the life of the floor.

3. What type of finish is it?

Before you even opt for any maintenance schedule, you must think about the finishing it has. Each kind of wood finishing requires different sort of care and maintenance. Choose only the best product for the floor and determine the schedule of maintenance. Your wooden floor will appear beautiful for the years to come.

4. Bolster the finishing

Hardwood floors are normally polished or coated with a special type of wax or varnish to restrict spills from seeping into the grains. But, it is unfortunate to learn that even the toughest of grains might not be able to withstand heavy traffic. You may cover the floors with the area rugs. This mainly applies to living room floors and the area adjacent to the exterior door.

Just like the other types of floors, even the hardwood floor has thermal expansion coefficient. This thermal expansion coefficient is affected by humidity. Boards of the floor can separate if there is too much humidity. To keep a check over the humidity level, you may use a dehumidifier.

By following the maintenance tips stated above, you can maintain your floating timber floor such that it lasts for ages. Besides frequent cleaning, you may also consider expert refinishing from time to time.
